Once upon a time John Iulo (1860-1932)came to the United States about 1881 from Laurenzana, Basilicata,Italy and settled on Elisabeth Street on the Lower East Side of Manhatten. The Manhatten air must have agreed with him and his wife, Theresa, because they had ten children. One drowned at Coney Island as a teenager. Another died giving birth. Most of the others settled on Long Island.
He was a violinist and started his career playing on excursion ferries, at weddings and other such gigs. He later performed at the New York Opera House and in the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He became a citizen in 1888. He retired from the Musicians Union in the late 1920's and moved to Patchogue, Long Island, NY.
