My Hagans (formerly O'Hagan) came to Australia from Co Armagh in Ireland in 1838 as free immigrants. Their names were Sarah (nee Lester) and James Hagan. With them were two small children. They arrived in Sydney in 1838 aboard the 'Mandarin.'

They settled in Sydney, changing their name to Egan as the years rolled on. There is a story that says they left Ireland because of religious differences (catholic and protestant) and family wanting to bring the children up in one particular relion. Not sure how true that is.

The name change is common as at the time, few could read and write (although James could do both) and the language was such that Hagan could easily have been pronounced Eighan resulting in Egan.

Anyone with any interest or clues would be most welcomed.

I live in Brisbane Australia.
