In the 19th century it was very unusual for a husband and wife to separate, and even rarer for the husband to hqave custody of the children. This is what happened in my family however. Robert mabson moved his brood to Chelmsford,Essex. He, eventually, brought his mother from Suffolk to look after them. And his wife's contact with her children? Once a month she was allowed to stand at an upper window at The Plough public house as her children were walked by. How's that for fathers' rightsd?
