Grandpa Angelo Caleca, the son of Giuseppe and Maria Stella (Scolaro) Caleca was born August 29, 1898 in Castellammare del Golfo, Sicily at 5:00 pm in Vico Stella Street. His home had a terrace with a balcony on the second floor. There were two bedrooms and the first floor had a dinning room and a kitchen.
Grandpa Angelo only attended school until the first grade. He mainly helped his father. On April 2, 1910 Grandpa Angelo received a certificate stating that he could practice fishing in Sicily with his father. They rented a boat called La Nuova Maddalena and they sailed locally in Sicily catching fish and selling their catch in town.
Grandpa Angelo left Sicily at the age of 16 from the Port of Palermo and arrived on Ellis Island on April 16, 1914 traveling with his friend Vito Franzino on the ship the Berlin.
After landing in America, they both traveled to Rutland Vermont by train. Grandpa Angelo lived at 82 Franklin Street, Rutland, Vermont with his father Great-Grandpa Giuseppe Caleca. They worked in an iron foundry for the railroad. They left Vermont in 1916 and returned to New York City when his mother Maria Stella (Scolaro) Caleca arrived. She was a seamstress and finisher and worked on woman's dresses. She left Castellammare del Golfo and departed from the port of Naples and arrived on Ellis Island on December 16, 1916. She traveled on the ship the Giuseppe Verdi. Grandpa Angelo, Great-Grandpa Giuseppe and Great-Grandma Maria Stella moved to 22 Havemyer Street, Manhattan.

Grandpa Angelo's first girlfriend was named Rose and she had a sister Victoria who was crazy about Angelo. Their father said no to Grandpa Angelo courting her because he was afraid of WWI and thought that Grandpa would be drafted and never come back. Grandpa was upset but since he was not in love with her, he decided it was for the best that the relationship ended. However, Victoria was so crazy about Grandpa Angelo that she went to his shop with a bundle of clothing and asked him to elope. Grandpa was furious and he told her he did not love her and never did and asked her to leave and never come back.
