The research done by myself and a distant cousin, Helen Odum Harrell finds our branch of the Odum family in South Carolina around the early 1800's. Helen has laid a great foundation for other Odum researchers like myself to build on and I take this opportunity to thank her and give her the due credit she deserves. Helen found that our ggg grandfather John O. Odum was born in South Carolina in 1813. He moved on into Georgia where he married Elizabeth Jordan, daughter of Radford Jordan and Elizabeth Hogg. John then moved his wife to Alabama where he joined Capt. Littleberry Roger's Company to help battle the Indian Massacres in Southern Alabama. While living in Alabama John and Elizabeth had 4 children then they moved onto Mississippi. John was a farmer and a circuit preacher. I have not found evidence that he was ever an ordained Methodist preacher though. John and Elizabeth had 6 children in Mississippi. They then moved on to Rapides Parish, Louisiana. Elizabeth passed away sometime during the 1870's in Louisiana and John remarried Mrs. Lavinia Dier. John eventually moved onto Nacogdoches County, Texas where he passed away about June 1880. The location of his grave is as much a mystery as the names of his parents. During her research Helen found that more than a dozen Odum households in South Carolina had a male child John's age and since the children were not listed on the early census reports she could not determine which household was John's parents. We welcome any information, photos and stories in hopes of filling out the mysterious family tree. Feel free to email me @ charlesodum@hotmail.com .
