He married MARTHA E. UNKNOWN. She was born Abt. 1842 in Pennsylvania. Notes for JOHN ALEXANDER GOODYEAR: JOHN ALEXANDER GOODYEAR John A. Goodyear, a son of Jacob Goodyear and Mary Ann Messinger, enlisted at age 21 in Captain Lee's Company C, 130th Pennsylvania Infantry on 25 July 1862, at Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pa., for nine months service. He was mustered into the service at Harrisburg, Pa., on 13 August 1862, and paid $25 bounty. This regiment, which originally had 1,005 men on its rolls, first saw service in its defenses of the City of Washington, D.C., in Fort Marcy. This was the northern-most fort on the west side of the Potomac River, lying above Chain Bridge. It overlooked the Leesburg and Georgetown Turnpike. This assignment was of short duration as by mid-September the regiment was brigaded with the 14th Connecticut and the 108th New York under Col. Dwight Morris as the Second Brigade of Brig. Gen. William H. French's Third Division, Sumner's II Army Corps. Goodyear served with this regiment in the battle of Antietam (Sharpsburg) on 17 September 1862, where his regiment had 178 casualties (32 killed and 146 wounded). The next battle was that at Fredericksburg, Va., on 11-15 December 1862, where the regiment had 79 casualties (5 killed, 71 wounded, and 3 missing). The records show that Private John A. Goodyear was slightly wounded in the arm in this engagement, but he was present for duty on the January-February 1863 muster roll. Although the regiment's term of enlistment would be up 13 May they were present at the battle of Chancellorsville, Va., 1-3 May 1863. The regiment suffered 29 wounded. As of 27 May 1863, the 130th Pennsylvania Volunteers, whose expiration of service was calculated as being 11 June, was reduced in strength to 404. By 31 May the regiment had been sent home for mustering-out. Company G, John Goodyear's unit, had been sent home to Camp Curtin before this date, and he was mustered-out on 21 May 1863. Goodyear, the second son of Samuel Goodyear and Mary Ann Morret, enlisted 1 September 1864 for one year at Harrisburg, Pa., as a private in Company A (Capt. John B. Landis), 209th Pennsylvania Volunteers, Col. Tobias B. Kauffman. He was described as age 18, a farmer by occupation, with light hair, eyes, and com- flexion, height 5' 11''. His enlistment was credited to South Middleton Township. Cumberland County, Pa. He was mustered-in on 6 September 1864. Enlisted in the same company were John and William Goodyear. The 209th Pennsylvania was sent south to Bermuda Hundred, Va., 17 September 1864 where by 31 October 1864, it was placed in Col. Joseph H. Potter's Provisional Brigade of Butler's Army of the James. On 8 November 1864, the regiment cast its absentee votes for President with Lincoln receiving 311 votes and McClellan 254 votes. Jacob Goodyear's active service was cut short by his capture in a picket skirmish in front of Bermuda Hundred on the night of 17 November 1864. Private William Goodyear was captured at the same time. Taken from the point of capture through Chester Station, Jacob Goodyear was received and confined at Richmond, Va., 18 November 1864. On 4 December, he was sent to prison at Salisbury, N.C. Several months later he was brought back from Salisbury to Richmond on 24 February 1865. He was then paroled at Cox's Wharf, Va., on the James River, on 10 March 1865, and was shipped North, reporting at Camp Parole (near Annapolis), Md., on 17 March 1865. Three days later, 20 March, he was given a furlough for 30 days which he used to visit his home and family in Carlisle. He was sick at home and confined to bed ''with a low, nervous fever, which has followed the protracted diarrhoea, which he suffered with during his stay in the Rebel prisons.'' Dr. Cook, his attending physician, certified to Jacob's illness and on 15 April 1865 requested a 30-day extension of his leave which was granted. Returning to Maryland, he was again hospitalized, this time in the U. S. General Hospital, Annapolis, Md. Although his regiment was mustered-out at Alexandria, Va., on 31 May 1865, Jacob was not discharged while still hospitalized. His discharge was furnished 7 June 1865. After the war. he was a member of the Capt. Colwell Post No. 201, Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) in Carlisle. Notes for EZRA GOODYEAR: ![]() EZRA GOODYEAR was born in February, 1848 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, the second child of four to the first marriage of Benjamin Curtis Goodyear. His mother, Catherine Stoner, died when he was only four and a half years old, and he, along with his siblings, were raised by Benjamin's second wife, Catherine Ramp. In July of 1863, near Harrisburg, PA, he joined a group of soldiers of the 8th Illinois Cavalry who had escorted the body of General Elon Farnsworth from Gettysburg. He rode with them to Alexandria, Virginia, was put into uniform, and sworn in at Petersville, Maryland on July 18, 1863. The officer who swore him in asked his age and he said he was 18, for fear they would not accept him. He was actually only 15 years and six months old. A "description" card in his Military records shows that he was (supposedly) 18 years old, stood 5' 5 1/2", had brown hair and eyes, and a fair complexion. Another document shows that he was enlisted for a period of "3 years (or war)." View Ezra's Militray Records. It was near there (Sailors Creek) on April 6, 1865 that Sheridan's forces cut off, and killed or captured 7,600 of the remaining Confederate forces, and in so doing, helped bring about their final surrender on April 9, 1865. Ezra was never wounded in any of these engagements. The 8th Illinois was mustered out on July 17, 1865, at Benton Barracks, St. Louis, MO.
