My paternal grandpa, Pepaw (Lawrence L. Labry, Sr.) dental salesman going with my grandmaw, Nenaw (Catherine Tomeny) dentist, who he sold dental supplies to walked by the house to Ruli's food store on corner of Dante and Spruce Street and showed her the house and proposed to her there on Spruce Street. The House is 8236 Spruce Street.
Pepaw smoked Prince Albert tobacca in a pipe. Nenaw sent me to the grocery across the street from the corner, Ruli's Food Store. Her list was a quart of Borden's skim milk, 2 Swanson chicken tv dinnes (sometimes turkey), Special K when needed, Duz soap powder when needed, occasionally mushroom soup, and Prince Albert tobacco. Her list was practically the same every day. For going to the store everyday for her, big girl stuff, she treated me to Nutty Buddy Ice Cream cone. I enjoyed Coca Colas when I was young one. I eat Special K. May May, her sister, my great aunt bought a six pack of Falstaff beer, cottage cheese and peaches, luncheon meat, diet bread, and spread, vanilla wafer cookies. She enjoyed oysters loafs at times. Nenaw loved classical music and belonged to Longine's Symphony club to get her records by mail. She always spoke well of Mrs. Labry, her mother in law (Emilie Queyrouze) who was a finished pianist and taught the guy who opened and started Juliard Music School. Nenaw loved to read news magazines. Nenaw was a dentist. She had an office at Maison Blanche Building on Canal Street, where she took me and Kitty to see Santa Claus. We had turkey dinner at the cafeteria at Maison Blanche and went to see Santa Claus. --[Susie Labry, Property of Jimmy Labry]
