My grandfather, Thomas Kane, was with "B" Company, 8th Battalion of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers.
He was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1878 and joined the Fusiliers as a young man, He served in South Africa during the Boer War. During the week of the Easter Rising in Dublin 1916 he was on his way to Verdun during WW1.His battalion was camped overnight at Loos 29 April when a German gas attack on the Irish trenches caused devastation. About 1,590 injured and 538 dead including my grandfather. His death is recorded on Panel 127-129, Loos Memorial, Pas De Calais, France. His widow, my grandmother, later married an American soldier holidaying in Dublin c1919 and moved to America, leaving my father behind. We have a Sargeant Arthur Kane, 6th.Royal Dublin Fusiliers in the family. We dont know if he was a brother of Thomas Kane or a close relative. I have checked the Commonwealth War Graves site but there is no mention of an Arthur Kane. We do know that he was killed in Picardy, France 1915.
