My grandmother, Elizabeth Kane nee Kelly, was the Linen Mistress at the Shelburne Hotel in Dublin c1910-1917. Her husband, Thomas Kane, was killed in action in 1916. They had one child, my father Albert, born 1905. After my grandfather's death she met an American soldier (we think his name was McGrath)at the hotel and married him c1917. All we know about this American is that his family owned steel mills in Deluth, Minn. They went to America at that time,we think to Williamsburg, VA leaving my father behind with his grandmother. Some years later we heard that they had returned on a visit to Dublin with their daughter aged about seven years. As far as we know she didn't try to find my father, who by this time was married with five children. We know that her sister, a Mrs.Moylan, and her son Barney, followed her to America soon afterwards. To the day he died (aged 88)my father waited for each knock at the door in the hope that it was her returning to collect him. As a PS, I e-mailed McGrath Steel in Deluth but never received a reply.
