John Battist came down from St. Francis, Canada and joined Capt. Vincent's Indian Rangers in Vermont. Capt Vincent was also Abenaki. The unit was under Gen. Glover and much is written about them all on the web. John married several times. Being Abenaki he was nomadic back and forth from northern Vermont to St. Francis in Canada. Children known of John by his wife Mary probably also Abenaki, were John2, Joseph, and probably Charles and by a second wife Betsey Batease. Joseph married 2 times we know of and had 18 children by the two wives. I am trying to collect photos of his 18 children, and so far have two. Children by his first wife: Luthera Batease b. c 1845 was in a census at age 8, then nothing more known of her, George Wallace Batease (Batise)[b. 1846 died in Civil War unmarried], John T. Batease (b. 1850), Judah R. Battease (b. 1853), Sarah Ida Battease (b. 1856)[Judway]. IRA BETHUEL BATEASE (b.1858), Caroline M. Batease (b. 1861)[Perry], Charles Henry Batease (b. 1863), Martha J. Batease (b. 1864)[Johnson/Fenton].
Children by the second wife: George Battese (b. 1872), Charles A. Battese (b. 1874), Tip Battese (b. 1877), "baby" Battese (b. 1880), William Battise (b. 1882), Mary Battice (b. 1884), "baby girl" Battese (1890). All children were born in Vermont. I am trying to collect as many photos of these people as I can. Please feel free to contact me.
