James Mccarthy was born in 1868 to Irish parents, Daniel and Catrin in Croydon, Surrey England.In 1888 he married Florence Stirrup.In 1890 he joined the Oxford Light Infantry.In 1895 he served on the Punjab Frontier and won the India medal, returning again in 1897.That year he passed his exams to become a Corporal.
He also served in Gibralta and in South Africa.In 1905 he retired from the army due to injury.He died in 1944 after a long illness.
