I am a family historian, to my utter amazement and delight, I recently discovered that my Gt x 4 grandmother directly through my maternal line, was called Maria Gant and was born in Rio De Janeiro. She was married to an Englishman and her surname became Burrell. On the first census of 1841, it is stated that she was born in Rio De Janeiro but a British subject (she was married by this time) so I do wonder if she became a British subject when she married her husband who is described as a soldier and was 20 years older than she was.

My story unfortunately is incomplete because I would dearly love to know something about Maria Gant's early years in Rio De Janeiro but to date have not found any such information.

Looking back at an old photo I have of one of her granddaughter's who is my Gt x 2 grandmother, she looks as if she has very dark hair and I can remember a Gt uncle of mine who would have been Maria's Gt Gt grandson, he was very dark haired and olive skinned.
