John Seaman was born either 1832 or 1833, somewhere in England. He left the country on a ship that wrecked at the Natal Coast of Southern Africa. I believe he left on HMS Birkenhead
a troopship that wrecked near Gansbaai, Western Cape, Southern Africa on 26th February 1852.

Why I believe he was on that ship, is, as the story goes, he married six months after he swam ashore. According to the dates I have, it all fits nicely together. The lady in question was my Great Grandmother a miss Swanepoel, whom he married on 25th August 1852, six months after HMS Birkenhead wrecked.

They had 9 children, one of which was my Grandfather George Jacobus William Seaman.
