Thomas Bascom was born about 1602 in Dorset England.  He came to Dorchester, near Boston, Massachusetts about 1634.  The majority of Bascoms in the United States can trace their ancestry back to Thomas Bascom.  Since 1949 the Bascoms in New England have been holding family reunions every three years.  For more information on the reunions, and the genealogy collected by the Bascom Reunion Association, see www.BascomGenealogy.com.

History

Tracing the ancestry of Thomas Bascom and the roots of the Bascom name is difficult. The two most popular theories are that Thomas was descended either from a branch of the Battiscombe families of southern England or from a line of French Huguenots bearing the Bascom name.  The French theory suggests the name originated from "Basque Homme", although there is no evidence to prove this.  There are large branches of the family in England today who spell the name Bascombe, and another branch in the Caribbean who spell the name Bascomb.

Name Origin

One theory suggests the name came from the French "Basque Homme" meaning a Basque man.   Another is the family resided in Boscombe, England.   A third theory is the name was shortened from Battiscombe, which is an old established English family.
