The earliest direct ancestor I presently know of on this lineage is William Butler. So, drawing from just a few scant facts, let me summarize what I know about this man. William was born in 1790 (or about 1797) near Cashel, County Tipperary, Ireland. He married Winifred Godfrey in Ireland before 1819. They had six known children. This family sold nearly all their possessions and emigrated from Ireland during the beginning of the famine years – likely sometime in 1833. They left Liverpool, England in March of 1834, arriving in New Orleans on April 30, 1834. They continued up the Mississippi River and the Ohio River, disembarking in Louisville, Kentucky. They settled in Jefferson County, Kentucky, in the vicinity of Louisville, for 12 years, from 1834 to 1846, whereupon their sons then moved to Johnson County in the Iowa Territory. William died prior to October 1850, likely in Louisville Kentucky; it appears likely that he died in 1845-1846. There is record of a William O. Butler who was buried in Louisville, Kentucky on September 13, 1847 – it is possible that this may have been our William. Winifred was born in 1791 in Ireland; it is thought that she died in 1850; in any case, it was prior to October 1850. She may have been buried in Iowa City, Johnson County, Iowa – but there is no digital record to affirm this assertion. So, again, there is not much to go on, but it looks as if William and his wife settled in Kentucky and never left that state while their sons ventured into Iowa – it's a rational assumption anyways.

Mary Agnes (Lerg) Butler
My personal records indicate that John Cornelius Butler married Mary Agnes Lerg in a catholic service by a Father Duval on August 4, 1917 in the Church of the Sacred Heart in Nogales, Santa Cruz County, Arizona. John, who called himself “Jack”, first met Agnes in the recreation room of the catholic Sacred Heart Church in Prescott, Arizona where Agnes spent her summers; Jack was playing pool with the priest there. They began dating some years later. Agnes took a narrow gage railroad from Jerome to Ash Fork to meet Jack who came in from Kingman to meet her. He was working for the Standard Oil Company at the time. On that day, they were engaged to be married. They planned to marry in June, but put off the wedding because of the war. Congress declared war on Germany April 6, 1917. Agnes returned to her sister Ida’s home in Prescott while Jack was transferred to Clifton, Arizona. Agnes obtained a job in Clifton and moved there. They were then married in August of that year in Nogales. After the First World War, Jack and Agnes settled in the small town of Williams, Arizona. They loved living in Williams and desired to establish their roots there; however, his position with Standard Oil Company caused him to be frequently transferred throughout the state of Arizona. Jack continued working for Standard Oil for 15 years (from about 1915 to about 1930) until he was transferred to Winslow. They moved to Winslow, but then he decided to quit his position with Standard Oil and took on the position of town clerk in Williams so that they could live there. Jack retired from the city of Williams on April 15, 1953. Jack and Agnes owned and ran a motel located at 437 West Bill Williams Avenue (aka, Highway 66) for about 28 years – calling it the Butler Motel. This motel was called the Mountain Country Lodge in 1929. Considering the name hadn’t changed yet, this may be before Jack and Agnes owned it; however, they were living in Williams off and on since prior to 1920. They loved the town and the area and kept coming back to it. Running a business like this was nothing new to Jack; Jack’s father, John B. Butler, was also keeping boarders in 1880. Running a motel requires a variety of skills to provide services to weary travelers; but there is more to it than offering a comfortable room with all the amenities. Management of a small motel such as this requires the handling of many important tasks that lead to loyal customers who tell others about their stay and book again when they are in the area. It requires organization, a focus on customer service, maintenance, and promotion. Our grandmother, Agnes, fit the bill perfectly! Our mother, Frances, described her mother, Agnes, as an “extremely intelligent” woman.
Brandy L Butler of Baton Rouge, East Baton Rouge County, LA was born on May 26, 1983, and died at age 17 years old on January 26, 2001.
John Cornelius Butler
John Butler and Mary Agnes Lerg married in a catholic service by a Father Duval on August 4, 1917 in the Church of the Sacred Heart in Nogales, Santa Cruz County, Arizona. They had four children. He was an Agent for Standard Oil. He subsequently became Town Clerk for the Municipal Light, Water, Streets, Sewers, etc. while living at 437 West Bill Williams Avenue (or West Route 66) in Williams, Coconino County, Arizona. They sold this property on January 1, 1962 and moved to 105 East Sherman Avenue in Williams. He passed away on December 17, 1965. In her diary, my mother described her impression of her father, John Butler: “My father was a very quiet, kind, steady man. When I was little, I loved to crawl up on his legs while he was sitting down reading the paper. He would playfully switch positions to knock me off. We never really talked together; I just knew he would always be able to take care of whatever happened. He was my security. He smoked a pipe, and the aroma of the tobacco was comforting to me. I really savored the times I could see a twinkle in his Irish eyes. I am pleased when people say that I'm like my father.”

Bridget Butler was born on the 25th February 1884 in Kilkenny Ireland. Daughter of Martin Butler and mother Bridget. She was Christened ast St.Canices Church in Kilkenny. Godparents were Michael Manning and Johanna Butler.

On the 28th July 1909 she gave birth to Joseph Butler her son, his name was later changed to Bradley when she married the father, Joseph Bradley on the 12th November 1912.

They had eight children Joseph, John (died age 9 months), Richard Henry, John Christopher, Thomas Stephen, Bridget Mary, Robert Victor (Bobby) and Elizabeth Mary.

Bridget travelled from Kilkenny to Llanelly in South Wales UK with her three sons, Joseph, Richard, John Christopher.

She died on the 19th January 1972 and is buried in Llanelly with her husband Samuel Joseph.
After John Butler moved to Winston County, Alabama he wanted a nice family home with lots of fruit trees, mostly apple. There was a root cellar, the opening for it being in the back bedroom floor, where they kept their vegetables.

John always said an appropriate blessing at every meal. You could tell if he was real tired or sick because he would shorten the blessing to a simple 'Lord, bless us in supper. Amen'. It was customary in those days to have a lot of church company. Since John raised his own tobacco he made his own twists to chew. Once after church 2 or 3 of the men were sitting around the fireplace and John passed around a twist for the men to cut them a chew. One preacher remarked, "Is this our pay for preaching?" whereupon John retorted, "Poor preaching today".

Once when the Butlers had invited company for dinner and the meal was over, John had a plate piled high with backbones and potato peelings. His visitor had nothing left on his plate. The visitor said, 'You could always tell a workman by his chips' (Referring to that pile of bones on John's plate).
John retorted, ' And you can tell a dog by how he licks his plate'.

There was an old lady by the name of Beasley that attended Old Enon Church with the Butlers. She always carried a little down purse (they were called satchels in those days). When the spirit lifted her during church service she would say to her husband, 'Oh, Mr. Beasley, hold my satchel while I shout'. That expression became a by-word to use when anyone in the Butler family was real happy.

John wanted everything fixed up and nice looking. He was jolly, full of fun and friendly. They kept an 'oven' in the fireplace filled with baked sweet potatoes. If people were passing by, John would yell to them to stop awhile and 'come in and get you a tater'. They would stop and visit and eat potatoes by the fire.

John was a staunch Primitive Baptist and spent his last days preparing for a 'three days' meeting at Old Enon Church. He died in Sept 1909.
