Madelyn Grace (Gholston) Carsten was born to Cris D. Gholston and Naomi N. (Blocker) Gholston, and has siblings Isabella Gholston, Brock Gholston, and Cristina Gholston. Family, friend, or fan, this family history biography is for you to remember Madelyn (Gholston).
Claire Friedel Carsten was my beloved aunt. She was born on July 5, 1897 in Germany and lived for a time in Cologne, Germany. My grandfather, Alfred Lipmanson, was her father. I do not remember her mother's name. The couple was not married. Aunt Friedel was given over to the care of a couple who were too old to legally adopt her. They placed my aunt in the German Royal Ballet, during the reign of King (Kaiser) Wilhelm II, who reigned 1888-1918. There, she went to school and learned to perform ballet. All of her life, she was very graceful, cultured and refined. Aunt Friedel participated in some of the family activities of her father's family and remained an important and treasured part of our lives until her death at the age of 95 in Santa Rosa, California, in December, 1992.
Aunt Friedel and the rest of my family were all Jewish. She was married to Dr. Paul Rosenthal, who was gassed in World War I and, as a consequence, became addicted to morphine, which resulted in their separation and divorce. Friedel, who was heart-broken, moved to Italy and lived in a pension (boarding house), during the rise of Hitler and Naziism in Germany. In Italy, she met Ernest S. Carsten, a young lawyer from Berlin, Germany, who came from a fairly well-to-do family. Ernest's brother was Francis Carsten, who emigrated to England and was a historian, professor and author. Their sister was Mary Carsten, who became a scientist and researcher at University of California, Los Angeles. Ernest and Friedel moved to London, survived the Blitz in 1940, and came to the United States the following year, and lived in New York. Ernest joined the Army, worked on the Interhandel case, and earned an American law degree. He worked in the anti-trust division of the Justice Department in Washington, D.C. later serving under Robert F. Kennedy.
Friedel very much enjoyed her role as housewife, and she worked in retail stores in New York and Washington. Her friends and family were very important to her.
