He embarked from Wellington, New Zealand on 19 August 1916 aboard Transport Ship 'Aparima' to begin foreign military service, disembarking at Devonport, England on 25 October 1916. He then left for France on 15 November 1916 where he served in the field with the 3rd Battalion, C Company, New Zealand Rifle Brigade. He is listed as being sent to hospital sick on 29 April 1917 where his condition deteriorated over the next few days.
He died of bronchopneumonia in the 2nd Australian General Hospital in Wimereux, France while on active service on 8th May 1917.
