According to an elder of the Czrny family "czrny" means "dark" or "black". In Fred Hoffman's book of Polish Surnames: Origins and Meanings, 2nd Edition, he says that Czarny comes from the word czarny, which means "black".  But then again, that's Polish, not Czech.

Czrny Pronunciation & Spelling Variations

The original spelling of one branch of the family was  "Czrny" but it was changed to "Cherney". Apparently this happened during entry to the USA, through Ellis Ilsand.
