After that she returned to New York and was cast in Call Me Mister, which reunited her with Harold Rome, Lehman Engel, and Jules Munshin. She won critical acclaim and the Donaldson Award for her performance, which prompted Al Hirschfeld to caricature her in The New York Times.[17] It led to her being signed to a one-year contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer by Louis B. Mayer. Garrett arrived at the studio in January 1947 and made her film debut portraying nightclub performer Shoo Shoo O'Grady in Big City, directed by Norman Taurog and co-starring George Murphy and Robert Preston.[18] Mayer renewed her contract and she appeared in the musicals Words and Music, On the Town, Take Me Out To The Ball Game, and Neptune's Daughter in quick succession. Hello, my name is Tracy and I will tell you the story that has been passed down to me through my mother, grandmother, and G Aunts. My G granny was born Ila Lola Garrett and married Samuel Sanders (seen recorded as Samuel M. Saunders). The story is that G grandaddy was half Native American and looked it. But, let's get back to Ila. I do not know where she was born or what year but my guess would be between 1890-1900. Ila and Samuel had the following children, in order, Lena, Wilda, Nola, Gladys (my grandmother), Fama Faye, William (W.T), and Alma Fay. They also had another boy who passed away at a young age. Ila passed away either in Abilene, Tx, or that area when I was young, early to mid 60's?
My G grandmother must have been a stout woman to have raised all those children as Samuel died at the age of 48 (as told) from typhoid fever in the early years of the depression. Ila had her children help her make ends meet, as Granny told it, and granny sold lye soap on the streets and brought the money back to her Mother. All of my great Aunts had a hand in raising me and were truly a blessing. I miss them dearly. I would like to pass down our genealogy to my children and other family members as I am quickly becoming part of the older generation.
We have been told that a book/books have been written about our Garrett ancestors and how they were involved in helping to free good people (known as slaves) during the times of the underground railroad. It has also been said that some died during the civil war, so there is much history still, and someone out there who surely knows of it--and would like to share with me and others. Whatever you would like to share would be greatly appreciated by me and those we will leave behind. Please email me at [contact link] Thank you
