SCHUMANN, Laurel D. May 8, 1929 - February 29, 2012, Carmel, California - Laurie Schumann passed away on February 29. Born in New York City, she graduated from Boston University Sargent College and moved to Southern California in 1950. After a brief stint in the theater, Laurie settled into a career of teaching in the Los Angeles Unified School District and doing what she did best, helping others. Some thirty years later, Laurie retired to Carmel and she would tell you that's when her real life's work began. She unselfishly donated much of her time and resources to many local organizations. Laurie was a 17-year volunteer at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula and a 12-year volunteer with the Red Cross Disaster Team. She also served as a Community Human Services Board Member. Companion animals have always been a big part of Laurie's life as were her many contributions to the local SPCA. Everyone at the shelter looked forward to her cheery, helpful presence referring to her as the model team member who insisted on pulling her own weight. "I want the animals to have a fair shake in life. Since they cannot speak for themselves, I want to make sure they are given a voice and that they are well-treated," said Laurie in a recent SPCA Spotlight article. In 2003, she became a liaison for a new program between Meals on Wheels and The SPCA's Pet Meals. Laurie always believed in supporting the community in which she lived and she loved being part of the Monterey Peninsula. She also shared her love with Alfie, her special SPCA dog. At her request, no services will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to Pet Meals, SPCA of Monterey County, PO Box 3058, Monterey, 93942. Please visit www.thepaulmortuary.com to sign Laurie's guestbook and leave message for her family. Published in the Los Angeles Times on Mar. 7, 2012 Memories Phyllis De Smet-Howard February 27, 2019 It seems impossible to me that it has been seven years since Laurie left us, as my memories of her are still so alive and enduring. Her gifts are treasures to me, both physically - like the gold Norwich Terrier necklace I always admired, which she wore all the time, and she made sure it came to me when she no longer needed it and in her life lessons. Her assistance and advice in very important matters is still something for which I will always be grateful. If I didn't know where to turn for any big issue in my life, I knew Laurie would have an answer. And, she never let me down. Laurie had such a zest for living, and I think some of her enthusiasm rubbed off on me. She taught me the value of being thankful for each day and making every day very special. Laurie was a people person, and she seemed to have never met a stranger. I think Laurie's legacy is friendship, kindness, generosity, and most of all love - for both people and animals. Dianna Madronio (McCoun) April 18, 2012 I've just learned of your passing. Laurie you were a wonderful woman! I adored working with you at the SPCA and I enjoyed our dinners and time spent together. I learned so much from you. You truly set an example of what wonderful people are all about. You've set the bar high dear lady, very, very high. My heart goes out to Laurie's family... Phyllis De Smet-Howard April 8, 2012 Laurie was a great personal friend, who will be sorely missed, and memories of her will be held warmly in my heart. She was someone who was always ready to help out with solutions, when problems seemed insurmountable. She was an exceptionally generous lady. Laurie had such a zest for living, and she seemed to enjoy each and every moment. The times we shared will be treasured always. Cheryl Michaels March 28, 2012 We celebrate Laurie's Life - it was indeed a life well lived. She will be missed by many. We will especially miss her in the summer, when we make our annual trek to Maine, and every time we eat lobster, and every time we see a Yorkshire Terrier, and so much more. Our love and condolences to her many friends. Pam & Clyde Klaumann March 14, 2012 Laurie will indeed be missed. She was a dedicated servant to so many Carmel activities. A friend to all she met. Our love and condolences to her family. Rosalind Serafin March 10, 2012 Laurie welcomed me with opened arms when I moved here in 1994. She cared about helping everyone, and always finding ways to improve whatever project came her way because she deeply cared for all! March 9, 2012 The Yes for Carmel meetings will have a large hole blown in them without Laurie being there to greet the members. She always made us feel welcome and special. We will always think of her when we arrive. Lee & Gloria Eldred, Carmel, CA Robin McCrae March 9, 2012 Laurie cared so deeply for our clients at Community Human Services, especially the at-risk and abused children and the runaway and homeless youth. She served tirelessly on our board of directors for nearly 20 years. I admired her greatly and will miss her even more. amy diaz deleon March 9, 2012 Laurie, you will be missed. Not only did I get the pleasure of treating your health but also working with you at the SPCA. You always brought a smile where you went and we loved seeing you. I know God got a great angel till we meet again this isn't a good bye, its a "Will will see you again." xoxo amy diaz deleon March 8, 2012 Laurie was/is my inspiration. She personified selfless giving. She acted like it was no big deal. Watching her as a new volunteer years ago at the SPCA, I tried to follow her example. "There is always something to do." You just get up and do it. Laurie could throw those salad lunch boxes around at the Wag and Walk; feed all the folks at the Telethon year after year, and charm donations out of the local businesses. At the ripe young age of 80. She brought people together; our "Tuesday Group" of volunteers enjoyed so many dinners she arranged (relentlessly). The last time I held her hand, she looked up and said "we had fun, we made friends." Oh, Laurie, you have so many friends, and we all shall miss you deeply and remember you now that you have crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Paula and Phil Riordan
