- Death of Mr. Beck.
A portion of our issue last week contained the announcement
of the death, last Saturday morning, at the Union House of
Mr. Christopher Beck, an old resident of this city, but who for
the past year had been living with his son in Crawford county.
A fact that we did not learn last week is that the immediate
cause of Mr. Beck's death was poison, a partly burned paper
being found on the floor, bearing a poison label with the name
of Knaul, druggist, Denison. Coroner Lukens being notified,
impaneled a jury and held an inquest.
- Following is the verdict:
STATE OF IOWA, Clinton County } An inquisition holden at Lyons,
in Clinton county, on the 8th day of January, 1881, before E. Lukens,
coroner of said county, upon the body of Christopher Beck there
laying dead, by the jurors whose names are hereunto subscribed,
the said jurors upon their oath do say that said Christopher Beck
came to his death by poison, taken accidentally. In testimony
whereof the said jurors have hereto set their hands the day and
year aforesaid. - John Gallion, Robert Blakely, Wm. Lyall.
- The deceased was about 85 years of age,
and leaves three children - Wm. Beck of Vail,
Mrs. Benning of Camanche, and Mrs. McNail
of Ashley, Illinois.
The funeral which occurred last Sunday, was
conducted by the German Association and
the Schuetzen Verein, a large number attending.

Popular Beck Biographies
Camille Mary Beck's father was Robert Maupin Beck (1918 - 1992), a clerk in 1961 at Bank of America, known as "Iceberg Slim", and her mother was Betty Mae Shew (1936 - 2009), his common law wife in the 1960s. Wikipedia reports that Robert was a former pimp who later became an author. She had half siblings James, Bellisa, and another half-sister. Her father was a writer and supposedly wrote "Doom Fox", over which Camille sued her stepmother, saying that the novel is a counterfeit. Camille claimed that her sister Melody and stepmother, Diane, conspired to pass off a book written by her step-mother's brother as "the real thing." Her father had written seven earlier books.
The lawsuit and a subsequent film caused an uproar and curiosity about the blended Beck family. In 2016, this post was added to the lore of Camille: Posted December 28, 2016
The inscription on her headstone is:
"You were a mother, daughter, my sister
