George was born in Saarwerden Co., Alsasce Loraine. This territory is on the boarder between France and Germany and has changed nationality many times. His father was a tailor and they like most, had a small substance farm. George learned both trades. At the age of 26, he traveled to the French port of Havre where he boarded the ship Logan with his mother and sister Elisa and immigrated to America. On Oct. 5, 1857 they arrived in New York City. Unfortunately their mother became ill and died shortly after arrival. George then made his way to Defiance, Ohio where he became a tailor. He Married Mary Schlert on Sept. 11, 1860. They bought a farm in Emerald Twp., Paulding Co. Ohio where they moved and he became a farmer until his death.
Mary was born in Bavaria Germany To John and Anna Schlert. There are at least 9 known spellings of their last name. Slerit, Sleigart, Shelerit, Schlerth, Schlersh, Schlerit, Scheret, and Schlert. My guess is that their English was not good and they did not know how to write, so every time they filed a form, the person spelled it like it sounded to them.
Josephine was born and lived on the family farm in Emerald Twp. In 1888 when she was 26 years old, she married John Bopry, a 50 year old widower from Perrysburg, over 50 miles away. Her parents were furious and disowned her. At the turn of the century, Josephine an John had two children and lived on a farm in Jerusalem Twp. Lucas Co. By 1910 John was 73 and Josephine was 47 and they had moved to a farm in East Bay Twp., Grand Traverse Co. Michigan where they lived with their 2 children now 20 and 21 years old. The family is absent from the 1920 census. John died in 1928 and Josephine moved in with her son on his farm in Peniusula Twp. Grand Traverse Co. The 1940's finds Josephine still living with her son, now married with 2 children. Josephine died in 1951.

By 1920 George was living with his brother Charles on Charles's farm in Emerald Twp. Ohio. By 1930, George had moved in with his brother Frank at Frank's house at 610 Perry St. Defiance, Ohio. George had expanded his trade to include general repairs. By 1940, George was a boarder at 124-1/2 East St. in Defiance, Ohio. By this time he was 74 years old and not working. On August 6, 1943 at the age of 78, he was living on Wayne St. in Defiance and got in trouble with the law. He was arrested and sentenced to prison in Toledo, Ohio where he died a month and a half later.

He was in an auto accident on July 2, 1919 and suffered a broken left arm. At one point a man came into the market with a gun and demanded cash. Frank pulled a butcher knife from under the counter and told the man " If I see the hammer on that gun move, I will thrust this knife through your chest". The man thought a couple of seconds and then slowly backed out of the market. 1930 found Frank 58 years old and living in a house he owned on 610 Perry St. in Defiance, Ohio. Frank was now a proprietor of a hotel in Defiance, Ohio. His brother George had moved in with him. The Great Depression hit and Frank seems to have disappeared with the economy. Frank spent the last 7 years of his life in the Lawton Nursing Home in Ft. Wayne, Indiana where he died of an extended illness at the age of 93.
