Andrew Kearney was born at Benalla in Victoria on 24 July 1911. He was the youngest of a family of nine children who survived to adulthood and his death marked the end of that family. He grew up on the home farm at Stewarton. Those were difficult times - it was a small farm and the family experienced a great deal of hardship and struggle but there must have been something special about his parents and family for they produced a gentleman of the highest order. For certain there was a great deal of love and care shared in that family circle. Andrew learned his farming skills from childhood being involved in the work of the farm during his schooldays. After his schooling he worked on the family farm - sons of farmers were not paid in those days but there were rabbits and in his spare time he made his own money from that source. There was some relaxation. Tennis was a popular sport and he developed a real ability with the racquet. There were social gatherings too and country dances and here he developed those social skills to widen in later life. Here too began the relationship with Flora. There was a certain frustration here as there was little prospect of being able to establish a home of their own. It became even more difficult when Flora moved to Melbourne to gain employment. Letters were the only means of communication and trips home were few and far between but the relationship was strengthened and at last the engagement could be announced and a ring (product of rabbit skins) could be proudly worn for all the years to follow. War clouds arose across the other side of the world and in 1941 Andy joined up and was allocated to the Fourth Field Ambulance. It was a most suitable posting for a man with such strong caring nature. War service provided an opportunity for marriage and on 17 January 1942 - Andy and Flora were able to establish their home together. It was not for long - Andy was posted to serve in New Guinea and he remained overseas until he was honourably discharged just prior to the end of the war. By this time farmers were needed to produce food for the armed forces and a hungry world. On his return to the farm Lionel was there to welcome him as well as Flora. The little fellow was a bit puzzled by this strange man to whom his mother gave such an important place. The farm again became the scene of his labours - Robyn and Meryl were added to the family. Times were still very difficult and finances were extremely tight. At length Andy took over the farm and the situation improved. He felt that there were greater opportunities in Queensland. And so in 1960, "Riverdale" , the farm at Stewarton was sold and the family arrived in Dalby on New Year's Day 1961. Eventually they were able to buy the property at Wandoan and engaged in sheep grazing and grain growing. The family named the farm "Tarwarri", an Australian Aboriginal word meaning "evening breeze" which was fitting due to the characteristic evening breeze which was always so welcome in the summer months. There were more bad seasons than good ones, dingoes were an increasing threat to the sheep but with hard work and a great deal of faith they began to prosper. Andy was active in community affairs, taking an interest in the concerns of men of the land. He was a Foundation member of the Wandoan Bowls Club and played his part in its establishment. In 1977 Andy suffered a heart attack and on his doctor's advice he and Flora moved to Toowoomba and established their home there at 6 Koenig Court, Wilsonton. Lionel followed his father's example and took over the farm. Despite his ill health, retirement provided an opportunity to travel. He found great enjoyment planning trips to see the parts of Australia unknown to him. He enjoyed contact with other travellers and established good friendships. He had a capacity for friendship and among his boyhood friends with whom he kept in touch was that great Australian, Sir "Weary" Dunlop. His health further deteriorated with the onset of Parkinson's Disease, but his spirit remained strong and hopeful. He was an active member of the Toowoomba Senior Citizens Club. Andy was a great family man. His marriage was particularly strong and happy relationship and all three of his children have great memories of an understanding and loving parent who had high ideals and shared them with his children. He will be remembered as a perfectionist . There was nothing shoddy about him. In Victoria, in earlier days with great effort he built a bridge to give regular access to the main road. It meant felling the trees - getting them to the site and adzing them to size. It was an heroic effort but that bridge has endured. He made no fuss about his achievements but quietly went about doing his work well. Andy died 04 January 1995 at Rangeview Nursing Home, Toowoomba.
