Martha "Mattie" Mays Kirby Wooddy
I have an old studio photograph of Mrs. C. A. WOODDY which was taken at the Pearl Studio in Rochester, NY sometime in the 1880's. Mrs. WOODDY appears to be in her 20's at the time the photograph was taken. I believe that this is a photograph of Martha "Mattie" Mays KIRBY WOODDY, the wife of Rev. Claiborne Alphonso WOODDY.
Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information regarding Mattie and her family:
Martha “Mattie” or “Matty” Mays or Jane KIRBY was b. 29 Nov 1856 in Newberg, OR to parents John Brammer KIRBY (1808-1870) and Rachel B. KIRBY (1821-1871). Mattie had two full siblings, a brother George William KIRBY (1862-1864) and William KIRBY (b. 1853) and four half siblings including Sarah; Joel Anderson; Mary Jane; and John Henry KIRBY, all born between 1832 and 1849.
Mattie married Claiborne Alphonso WOODDY (1856-1918) on 30 Jun 1879 in McMinnville, OR and they had three children including Merle Hilda WOODDY FINLEY (1885-1973); Carroll Hill WOODDY (1891-1935); and Marie Hazel or Sarah WOODDY (1905-1980). Mattie died 27 Feb 1936 in Portland, OR and is buried in the Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery in Portland, OR.
Mattie’s obituary lists her surviving family including daughters Mrs. Joseph A. FINLEY of Portland; Miss Marie WOODDY of Portland; her brother-in-law Edward WOODDY of Chehalis, WA; and a nephew Joel KIRBY of Peshastin, WA.
Mattie’s husband was b. 8 Feb 1856 in Brownsville, OR to parents Reuben Burrow WOODDY (1828-1899) and Sydney Anna HILL (1824-1860). Claiborne was one of two children born to this couple including as sister Mary Jane WOODDY WALKER (1859-1944). After his mother died his father remarried and three additional children were born including Martha Ellen; Theodosia Elisabeth; and Robert Edwin WOODDY, all born between 1862 and 1867.
Claiborne attended McMinnville College, University of Oregon (class of 1881), and the Rochester Theological Seminary obtaining his degree there in 1884. The couple was still living in Rochester, NY in 1887-1888. Claiborne was a minister in Pendleton, Weston, and Amity, OR. He was also the principal at the Indian Industrial School in Chemawa, OR. Claiborne came to Portland, OR in 1890 to become the editor of the Pacific Baptist weekly.
Then in 1902 he became superintendent of missions for the pacific region and Claiborne died 9 Nov 1918 in Portland, OR and is buried in the Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery in Portland.

Dane passed away June 18, 2017 in Chilliwack at the age of 46 years. He is survived by his parents Finch and Lavina; brother Blake; niece Amethyst; numerous aunts and uncles and other family members and dear friends. Dane lost his battle with aggressive cancer and will be missed by everyone who knew him.

It appears that Warren was their only child. Warren married Phoebe A. HENDERSON (1897-1984) on 24 Jun 1924 in Joliet, IL and Warren died 3 Feb 1976 in Earl, WI and is buried in the Cemetery of the Pines in Boulder Junction, WI.

Bruce Kirby, the prolific character actor known for playing Sgt. George Kramer on NBC’s “Columbo” and the father of Matt Dillon’s cop in the 2005 Oscar winner “Crash,” has died at the age of 95.
Kirby’s son, acting coach John Kirby, announced the news of his father’s death on Facebook on Monday.
“My dear brilliant dad Bruce Kirby passed away peacefully last night at Cedars in Los Angeles at the age of 95,” he wrote. “My heart is heavy but grateful for all the extra blessed years together.”
Kirby’s other son, Bruno Kirby, was a character actor who appeared in films such as “When Harry Met Sally…” and “The Godfather Part II” before he died in 2006 at age 57 due to complications related to leukemia in 2006.
Born in 1925, Bruce Kirby worked as an actor for nearly six decades, with credits reaching as far back as an appearance on “Goodyear Playhouse” in 1955. His TV credits include appearances on series as varied as “I Dream of Jeannie,” “Barney Miller, The Rockford Files,” “Punky Brewster,” “Golden Girls,” “The Sopranos,” “The West Wing” and “Scrubs.”
In addition to playing the gullible detective on “Columbo,” Kirby’s most prominent roles included District Attorney Bruce Rogoff on “L.A. Law” and Pop Ryan, the father to Matt Dillon’s character in the 2005 Academy Award Best Picture winner “Crash.”
“My father loved acting, and aside from his extraordinary professional career in television, film & theater, he never stopped working on it … It was very painful for him when he no longer could perform,” John Kirby wrote.
“Thank you, Dad, for everything you taught me about acting & how to have such a strong work ethic while sharing your love for the arts & the craft of it all,” John Kirby wrote. “I will miss you & love you always. I’m glad you’re up there with Bruno and so many of our loved ones.”
Albert Kirby of West Memphis, Crittenden County, Arkansas was born on October 4, 1915, and died at age 65 years old in July 1981.
Boss Kirby of Gallatin, Sumner County, Tennessee was born on July 17, 1888, and died at age 77 years old in February 1966.
Marjorie Ruth (Kirby) Hittlet of Las Vegas, Clark County, NV was born on June 29, 1939, and died at age 65 years old on April 24, 2005.

Mamie Jeannie Lott's father was Herman Clyde Lott (1897 - 1951) and her mother was Elsie Tomes (1900 - 1963). She had siblings Clydia Lou, Herman Clyde "H.C." Jr, and two other Lott sisters, with half sibling Ellese Suet Lott (1921 - 1989). Note: Jeannie's headstone says she was born in 1926 and social security records say she was born in 1925.
When Jeannie was 3, she was living with her parents Clyde and Elsie and sisters Ellese and Clydia Lou Lott, in Wilbarger Texas. Dad was a farmer.
Ten years later, the family was living in Tarrant County, Texas, and Jeannie was in the 7th grade. Besides siblings Ellese and Clydia, siblings H.C. Jr, Leblia, and Jonny Lott had been added to the family. Nineteen year old Ellese was a waitress in a café, Dad Clyde was a truck driver for a public school.
Jeannie married George Linley Miller (1913 - 1972) on January 16, 1953 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas. They had one daughter, Georjeane. Jeannie and George divorced on November 5, 1968, in Virginia.
She married again in 1972 in Pasquotank County, North Carolina. She married Maynard Page Kirby, her name was Jeannie Miller at the time.

My mother's father was also George but I do not know the name of her mother. I believe that he could be a descendant of Bishop Hugh Latimer who was burnt at the stake in Oxford England for heresy. Their children were Enid, Dorothy, Florence (Flo), George, Norman and my mother Lola.
Many English speaking families in South Africa have their roots in the 1820 Settlers but neither the Kirbys nor the Lattimers were among them and must have left Britain at a later stage.
