Between about 1880 and 1900, some of the many children of Peter Laux (of Germany, who immigrated to Sheffield, Lorain County, Ohio in the 1840s and then to Jay County, Indiana) migrated westward, ultimately settling in Oregon. At least two, Anna Maria and Joseph, made temporary stops in Michigan. Because I am descended from a Laux who did not migrate, I know very little about what compelled these moves, exactly when they took place, or exactly what happened to the Lauxes who traveled westward. Below is the information I have found in public sources.

If anyone knows more and can add comments or send more information, I would be grateful.

ANNA MARIA LAUX, born in Germany, married John Nicholaus Neitling in Sheffield, Lorain, Ohio where the Lauxes apparently first settled. They had many children and moved to Oregon at some time between 1892 and 1900, starting a large Neitling family.

JOHANN LAUX, born in Germany, did not migrate and remained in Ohio.

NICHOLAS LAUX, the first child of Peter to be born in the United States, in Sheffield, Lorain, Ohio where the Lauxes apparently first settled, did not migrate and remained in Indiana.

ADAM LAUX, born in Sheffield, Lorain, Ohio where the Lauxes apparently first settled, was my great-grandfather. He did not migrate and remained in Ohio.

MARY CHRISTINA LAUX, born in Sheffield, Lorain, Ohio where the Lauxes apparently first settled, did not migrate and remained in Ohio.

CHRISTOPHER LAUX, born in Sheffield, Lorain, Ohio where the Lauxes apparently first settled, moved to Oregon at some time between 1880 and 1900. I have little further information about him.

JOSEPH LAUX, born in Sheffield, Lorain, Ohio where the Lauxes apparently first settled, married Catherine Didion, had many children, moved to Michigan around 1885 and ultimately moved to Oregon at some time around 1900. It appears that they first went to Michigan in 1886 or earlier and stayed for some period, as his children Anthony (1886), Peter Joseph (1889), Frank John (1892), Mary Ann (1894) and Josephine (1896) were born in Michigan, and his oldest son Michael Joseph married in Michigan in 1899 and remained there. Several large families descend from Joseph.

HELENA AND CATHERINE LAUX appear to have died in infancy or childhood and did not take part in these migrations.

ANNA LAUX , born in Ohio, married Charles Wagner and ultimately lived in Illinois. She did not take part in the Laux westward migrations.

MICHAEL LAUX, apparently the youngest child of Peter and Elizabeth, was born in Sheffield, Lorain, Ohio where the Lauxes apparently first settled. He apparently never married, but he migrated to Oregon at some time between 1880 and 1910.
