Early Salmon

These are the earliest records we have of the Salmon family.

Peter was born in 1560 in Brough under Stainmore, Westmorland, England; he died in 1600 in Brough under Stainmore, Westmorland, England. He first married Alice ____ in 1584 in Brough under Stainmore, Westmorland, England. She was born in 1564 in Brough under Stainmore, Westmorland, England; she died in 1610 in Brough under Stainmore, Westmorland, England. Peter's second marriage was to Sarah ____ in 1607; she was born in 1588 in Laxton, Nottinghamshire, England, and she died in 1630 in Laxton, Nottinghamshire, England. Peter had one child with Sarah ____: Sarah Salmon. So, just what is “Brough under Stainmore”? According to Wikipedia, Brough, sometimes known as Brough under Stainmore, is a village and civil parish in the Eden district of Cumbria, England, on the western fringe of the Pennies near Stainmore; it lies within the historic boundaries of the ancient county of Westmorland. The surname apparently can be spelled “Salmayne” with the same pronunciation.
Christopher Salmon
Christopher was christened July 30, 1586 at St. Botolph without Aldgate, Aldersgate Street, Barbican, City of London, Middlesex, England; he died in 1625 in Laxton, Nottinghamshire, England. He married Sarah Curtis in 1605 in Nazeing, Essex, England. She was born in 1588 (1581) in Nazeing, Essex, England, and died in 1630 in Nazeing, Essex, England. Records appear to indicate that members of this family had frequently traversed the Atlantic from England to New England and back again. This might not have occurred; but in any case, a memorial in the Old Burying Ground of First Presbyterian Church in Southold, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York indicates that William Salmon, born in 1610 in England, sailed across the Atlantic to New York at the age of 25, which would place the voyage at 1635. This seems to make sense; what is “up in the air” is where each of the children of Christopher Salmon were actually born. Source information has yet to be found to verify. The Old Burying Ground of First Presbyterian Church in Southold, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York is the oldest English burying ground in the State of New York. It is also the site of the oldest English meetinghouse in the State.

Jane "Janey" Salmon Wood was born to John R. Salmon (1735 - 1803) and Susanah Lewis (1740 - 1802). Her father was born in Virginia and her mother was also born in Virginia. She had thirteen siblings: John, Elizabeth, Elijah, Martha, William, Henry, Mary, Winifred, Robert, Susannah, Anna, Reuben, and James Salmon.
John may have been born between 1738 and 1743 in Halifax County, Virginia; then again, he may have been born in New York. One listing states he was born June 11, 1747. He resided at Lawson’s Creek in Halifax County, Virginia. He married Susanah Lewis in 1761 in Halifax, Virginia. Another listing states he was a farmer, an appraiser, and a court clerk. He purchased 216 acres on April 25, 1761. On May 15, 1762, he purchased from William Byrd another 304 acres on the waters of Lawson's Creek. It is speculated that Susanah might have been either a cousin of John or Native American. It is reasonable to believe that he married a Native American since they were still around in parts of Virginia in the early and middle 1700s. Another listing states that in 1787 he purchased another 92 acres from a William Traylor on Butrum Camp Branch. In 1798 he went to court with the intent to construct a dam for the purpose of working a grist mill on this purchase. He died in 1803 in Halifax County, Virginia, sometime between July and late September of 1803. Susanah was born about 1740 in Halifax, Virginia. John was able to read and write and he taught most of his children to read and write. He also read for the Church of England; he would collect the tithes from the people in Pittsylvania County and Halifax County, Virginia. He was also in the militia in the same counties – these counties were just one county at the time. Three men by the names of William, Joel, and John Salmon lived on the same land on Lawsons Creek – located on today’s Hwy 58 at Cedar Grove Road (Hwy 708) - near Turbeville, in Halifax County, Virginia. John's daughter, Jane, was mentioned in his last will: “I give to Jenny Wood wife to William Wood Jur. a feather bed a cow and a saddle which she hath in position [sic].” It is here that we learn that William Wood's father was also named William Wood. The Salmons were farmers of corn and tobacco. John had “hundreds of acres of land”. They also had horses, oxen and cattle.
Her maiden name has been drawn from my personal records and has yet to be confirmed. One listing suggests her name was Susannah Bomar, born in 1758 in Halifax, Virginia; died in 1808 in Halifax, Virginia. However, the mother of John Salmon (born in 1762) would have to have been born prior to 1744.

Winifred “Winney” Salmon was born about 1773 in Halifax County, Virginia. She married John Boyd December 10, 1793 in Halifax County, Virginia. They had seven known children. James Harrison Salmon was born about 1783 in Halifax County, Virginia. His first marriage was to Phebe Wood (Trailer 70) in Halifax, VA in 1805. 24 They had two known children. Phebe was born about 1784 in Halifax County, Virginia; she died about 1815 in Halifax County, Virginia. His second marriage was to Dicy Walker; they had eight known children. Dicy was born about 1800 in Halifax County, Virginia; she died about 1896 at Bulls Gap, Tennessee. He died February 5, 1869 in Hawkins County, Tennessee. He was mentioned in his father’s will. One of these two children was John Salmon, who was born in 1790 in Halifax County, Virginia; in Halifax County, Virginia, on December 12, 1822, he married Agnes Torian (born about 1800 in Halifax County, Virginia and died September 7, 1844 in Trigg County, Kentucky), they had seven children and he died August 4, 1855 in Christian County, Kentucky.
