Upon their marriage at the Jefferson County, Alabama Courthouse in Birmingham. The marriage was performed by Rev E.R. Stephenson, "the marrying preacher", who had no church, but stayed around the courthouse to perform marriages for people getting their marriage licenses. Rev. Stephenson later shot and killed the priest of St Paul's Cathedral (RC) on the porch of the rectory for having performed the marriage of his daughter to an Italian Catholic.
