These are the earliest records we have of the Svendsen family.

Johan Severin Svendsen
Johan Severin Svendsen Famous Norwegian Composer Born: September 30, 1840, Oslo, Norway Died: June 14, 1911, Copenhagen, Denmark Nationality: Norwegian Johan Severin Svendsen (30 September 1840 – 14 June 1911) was a Norwegian composer, conductor and violinist. Born in Christiania (now Oslo), Norway, he lived most his life in Copenhagen, Denmark. Svendsen's output includes two symphonies, a violin concerto, a cello concerto, and the Romance for violin, as well as a number of Norwegian Rhapsodies for orchestra. At one time Svendsen was an intimate friend of the German composer Richard Wagner. His father was a music teacher and Svendsen learned both the violin and clarinet from him. By the time he finished school, he was working as an orchestral musician, and occasionally made short concert tours as a violinist. In Lübeck, on one of his tours, he came to the attention of a wealthy merchant who made it possible for him to study from 1863-67 at the Leipzig Conservatory. He began his studies with Ferdinand David, but problems with his hand forced him to switch to composition, which he studied with Carl Reinecke. He completed his studies in Leipzig in 1867, receiving first prize in composition. During this period, Svendsen had a son out of wedlock, Johann Richard Rudolph (1867–1933). Gradually his attention turned to conducting. After spending time in Paris (1868–70) and Leipzig (1870–72), he returned to Christiania. In the summer of 1871, he went to New York City to marry Sarah (Sally, later changed to Bergljot) Levett Schmidt, whom he had met in Paris. He was conductor of the Musical Society Concerts in Christiania (1872–77), then spent three years in Germany, Italy, England and France. He returned to teach and conduct in Kristiania (1880–1883). In 1883, he was appointed principal conductor of the Royal Theater Orchestra in Copenhagen, where he lived until his death. In 1884, he and his wife separated, and she moved to Paris. Their relationship had been chaotic for several years. A famous anecdote would have it that in 1883, in a fit of anger, she had thrown the only copy of his Symphony No. 3 in the fire. This incident was used by Henrik Ibsen in Hedda Gabler. If anything was caught up in the fire at all, it is rather unlikely it was anything near a complete symphony. However, some sketches, most likely for a symphony, were found by conductor Bjarte Engeset in 2007. They were elaborated and orchestrated by Bjørn Morten Christophersen and premiered by the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and Engeset in 2011. Following a divorce from Sarah (10 December 1901), he married (23 December 1901) Juliette Haase, with whom he had been living and had three children. His younger son from this marriage was the famous Danish actor Eyvind Johan-Svendsen (1896–1946). 1898 Music festival in Bergen by Agnes Nyblin. Left to right: Christian Cappelen, Catharinus Elling, Ole Olsen, Gerhard Rosenkrone Schelderup, Iver Holter, Agathe Backer Grøndahl, Edvard Grieg, Christian Sinding, Svendsen and Johan Halvorsen[1] In stark contrast to his more famous contemporary and close friend, Edvard Grieg, Svendsen was famous for his skill of orchestration rather than that of harmonic value. While Grieg composed mostly for small instrumentation, Svendsen composed primarily for orchestras and large ensembles. His most famous work is his Romance for violin and orchestra, Op. 26. He was very popular in Denmark and Norway during his lifetime, both as a composer and a conductor, winning many national awards and honors. However this popularity did not translate into acceptance into the international repertory of classical music. He died in Copenhagen, aged 70. Svendsen's first published work, the String Quartet in A minor, Op. 1, achieved great popular success. He quickly followed with the String Octet, Op. 3 and String Quintet, Op. 5, both of which added to his early fame. All of Svendsen's chamber music was written while he was at the Leipzig Conservatory, yet these works are not considered student works. By general consensus, Svendsen was regarded as one of the most talented students then at the Conservatory. His works won prizes and received public performances to much acclaim.
Son of Gulbrand Svendsen and Pernille Jonasdatter Elg. Married twice: first marriage (1876-1900) to Clara Elida Hansen, who passed away in 1900, and his second (1901-1918) to Jenny Ottesen. He had three children and one step-child.

Haakon Svendsen
Haakon Svendsen was raised in Gamvik Norway by his mother, Amanda Stevenson. He joined the American Army when the Nazi's invaded his home town in Finnmark. His sister was pregnant with boy and girl twins but the Nazis made sure that his sister and her twins died. But God made sure that this evil act would be partially rectified and nine months later in Brooklyn, New York, my twin brother and I were born! His mother Amanda Svendsen's boy and girl twin grandchildren Sandra and Stewart would always be treasured by their grandmother. Haakon gladly joined the U.S. Army and was sent to Colorado but was assigned to special and more dangerous Merchant marine assignments in the North Sea because of his knowledge of seamanship, of the German language, and his fluency in Norwegian and English. I read a letter he wrote to my mother and was shocked how perfect his English was. Today English is taught in Norway in the Public Schools, but back then English wasn't that common. My father loved to sing and play guitar, tell jokes, and had a high degree of culture. For many years I was extremely close to Jan Clayton and my mother said that my father had taken her to see Jan Clayton in 1946 to see the revival of "Show Boat" on Broadway. My mother later bought Jan's show albums for me as Christmas presents. I still have the original albums 60 years later. (And 75 letter and cards from Jan Clayton.) My father took me on a ship in Brooklyn and showed me around and introduced me to some Dutch sailors. I ended up studying Norwegian in high school and even today I am still studying Norwegian. My relatives (his sister's first child Karl-Arne Fredheim) came to stay with me. His wife Marianne could not speak English but his daughter "Connie" (Aude Fredheim) is fluent in English. I told them that I would talk to Marianne in Norwegian and they scoffed. Later they were surprised that I spoke a very formal Norwegian because my teacher, Dr. Samuel Abrahamsen taught a very formal Norwegian. There is a tribute to Samuel Abrahamsen by me on ancientfaces.

Elisabeth Doreen (Knowles) Svendsen MBE
Elisabeth Knowles Svendsen Elisabeth Doreen Svendsen MBE (23 January 1930 – 11 May 2011) was a British animal welfare advocate and former hotelier. Svendsen founded The Donkey Sanctuary, an animal sanctuary headquartered in Sidmouth, England, in 1969 to help abused or homeless donkeys. She also founded a related charity, the Elisabeth Svendsen Trust for Children and Donkeys, located in Ivybridge, during the 1970s. Svendsen was born Elisabeth Doreen Knowles in Yorkshire on 23 January 1930. She spent her early career as a teacher and secretary. She then married Niels Svendson and had four children - Clive, Lise, Sarah and Paul. Together, the couple invented a dryer specifically to dry cloth baby diapers. They sold the rights to their invention to a manufacturer and used their payment to purchase a hotel in Devon in 1966. Elisabeth and Niels later divorced. In 1969, Svendsen, a lifelong donkey enthusiast, bought her first donkey, named Naughty Face. Soon afterwards, Svendsen noticed seven neglected donkeys housed in a small livestock pen in a market in Exeter. She tried unsuccessfully to purchase the donkey in the worst condition of the group. The experience of the neglected donkeys in Exeter led Svendsen to establish The Donkey Sanctuary in 1969. She began taking in elder and disabled donkeys. She became responsible for the care of thirty-eight donkeys by 1973, an expensive undertaking. She was contacted in June 1974 by a lawyer for a late elderly woman named Violet Philpin, who had bequeathed Svendsen 204 donkeys. Svendsen gave up her hotel to work with The Donkey Sanctuary full-time. The Donkey Sanctuary, founded by Svendsen and headquartered in Sidmouth, Devon, has cared for more than 14,500 donkeys as of 2011. The sanctuary, which now has a veterinary hospital and overnight accommodations, employs approximately 500 people worldwide, including sixty in the United Kingdom who investigate reports of abused donkeys. Svendsen expanded the sanctuary to Latin America, Asia and Africa. She founded a donkey hospital with emergency room in Ethiopia, where the lifespan of a donkey is just nine years.[2] Mobile donkey clinics have also been dispatched in Mexico, Kenya and India. Donkeys at the Elisabeth Svendsen Trust for Children and Donkeys in 2007 Svendsen established a sister charity to the Donkey Sanctuary, called the Elisabeth Svendsen Trust for Children and Donkeys, during the mid-1970s. The trust provides riding therapy between donkeys and children with special needs. During her career, Svendsen authored more than twelve books, including two autobiographies, Down Among the Donkeys in 1981 and For the Love of Donkeys in 1993, as well as a series of children's books. Svendsen became a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 1980. In 2001, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals awarded her with the Lord Erskine Award.

Hi there,

I am married to Allen Trevor Svendsens' son Matthew and I am searching for information on the family. I have as far as Allens father Gunnah who came on a ship from Norway and broke his ankle (not sure if it was in port in Australia or on the ship on the way over) and stayed behind here in Australia. Prior to that I have trouble navigating the Norwegian records, and I can also find no record of Allen's mother.

If anyone has any information they can share I would be forever grateful.

Thanks
Felicity
