Candace Lynn Wheeler was born to Perleg N. and Emma C. Wheeler. She had a sister, Elsie.
Candace Wheeler was 20 years old when she married 25 year old James Patrick Montgomery on October 6th, 1970 in El Paso, Texas. The couple had a son, Ian Patrick Montgomery, in October of 1974, and a daughter.
In June of 1980, a woman named Betty Gore was brutally murdered in her home in Texas. The perpetrator struck her with an ax 41 times. Subsequently, Candace Montgomery, who was a friend of Betty's, was accused of the murder. Candace had previously been having an affair with Betty's husband, Allan Gore, but the affair had ended.
During the trial, Candace argued that she had acted in self-defense. She claimed that Betty had discovered the affair and attacked her with the ax. In the ensuing struggle, Candace had managed to wrest the ax away from Betty and had used it to strike back in self-defense, resulting in Betty's death.
In the end, the court found Candace "not guilty" of the murder. She subsequently moved to Georgia with her children and worked as a therapist with teens and adults. By that time, she had divorced her husband James, who later went by the nickname "Pat".

Jernard Wheeler was only 13 years old when he was tragically shot and killed in DeKalb County, Georgia.
Jernard was involved in an argument and lost his life during a double shooting that left him dead and another boy critically injured. Four persons were involved in the shooting, including an unnamed sixteen year old, and fifty two year old Viola Goodman with her children - twenty year old James Fanning, and twenty five year old Shontonious Hawkins.
It seems that everyone involved had an existing dispute, and a chance encounter led to the incident when the two groups happened to run into each other on McAfee Road off of Candler Road in Atlanta.

In Dekalb County, Georgia, shots are fired in broad daylight on a residential street, leaving one teenage boy dead and another critically injured. Lead Detective Bruce Brueggeman is shocked to discover that the shooter's mother may have been with him when he pulled the trigger. But forcing the family to give up the suspect is not going to be easy.
The four individuals thought to be responsible for the shooting were arrested: Viola; her sons, Shontonious and James, and a 16 year old suspect, and charged with murder and aggravated assault. They were held without bond. The 16 year old had turned himself in. Police thought that he was the actual shooter.

I was somewhat surprised to find the 1880 United States Census listing my maternal Grandfather as George E. Wheeler, age 2. I was surprised because I had always known him by the surname of Jackson. The Census also listed my Grandfather's brother as Thomas J. Wheeler, age 3. Further investigation revealed that their father was a man who was referred to as, "Old Tom Wheeler" the pack peddlar. The 1880 Census for Ross County, Liberty Township, Ohio listed a Thomas J. Wheeler, age 48, occupation, "Huckster". One of the definitions of Huckster is "Peddlar". My Grandfather and his brother were a out of wedlock issue. I believe the old "Pack Peddlar's" full name was Thomas Jefferson Wheeler. I do believe I found my Great Grandfather. The area was right, the occupation was right and I had been told that my Great Uncle Thomas Jefferson Wheeler was named for his father. I never knew why my Grandfather and his brother later rejected the Wheeler surname and assumed the surname of their mother. I suppose the out of wedlock issued was the reason. George L. Johnson

My name is Garry Griffin. My mother was Hettie Elmer Wheeler born Cloudy, OK, 1911 & died in McAlester,Oklahoma, 2002. Her father was Abraham Wheeler unknown where born & died. Died in 1918. Her mother was Rose Wheeler Standridge, Born Jan. 5, 1892 & died Nov. 11, 1977 in McAlester, OK. His, Abraham's, father was John Charles Wheeler born in Texas appx. 1868. Died appx. 1917.
