Georgia is the largest of the U.S. states east of the Mississippi River and the youngest of the 13 former English colonies (joined the US on January 2, 1788), is known as the Peach State or the Empire State of the South.

Georgia was founded in 1732, when its boundaries were even larger. It included much of the current states of Alabama and Mississippi and had the greatest number of plantations of any state in the South.

The state's landscape varies greatly since it ranges from the Appalachian Mountains in the north to the marshes of the Atlantic coast on the southeast and to the Okefenokee Swamp on the south.

Georgia's motto is "Wisdom, Justice and Moderation" and the state flower is the Cherokee Rose.
