Oliver Highgate,(based on this large framed photo hanging in his Ontario farmhouse) African Canadian, farmer, b. 1806, Chester County, PA, died 1881, Kent County, Ontario. Son of Aaron Highgate , b. 1764, Chester County, PA and Susanna, b. 1780 PA. Marrird to Eliza, b. 1816, PA. Emigrated to Ontario from Pittsburgh, PA area in 1850s, after the passage of the federal Fugitive Slave Act, along with brothers Aaron Highgate and James Henderson Highgate.
John Wesley Anderson, African American, b. October 22, 1887 in Union Springs, Bullock County, Alabama, died August 27, 1959 in Norfolk, Virginia. Son of William Anderson and Lucy Crowell Anderson, graduated Wilberforce College in Xenia, Ohio and Yale University in New Haven, Conn. Charter member Aplha Phi Alpha fraternity at Yale, A.M.E. church membership. Married to Mary Estelle Highgate (pictured elswhere on this site) who was born in Dresden, Ontario, Canada. Papa Anderson loved driving more than anything, and would drive the family to Alabama and Ontario every summer to visit grandparents.
Harriett & Henrietta Harris, beautiful(black/white/native american)twin daughthers of Robert Alexander Harris & Ellen Thompson Donnelly Harris, half sisters of Louisa Donnelly Highgate (pictured elsewhere on this site). Ellen Thompson (b. Ohio 1849) was the daughter of Alfred Vanacter Thompson (b. free 1816 Tenn.) and Ellen Cannon Thompson (b. free 1922 S.C., was one of five sets of twins born to her mother), who emigrated to Canada ca. 1865.
Ellen Thompson, b. 1852, in Ohio, daughter of Alfred V. Thompson (b. free Tennessee) and Susan Cannon Thompson (b. free South Carolina) , with her second husband, Robert Alexander Harris. Thompsons were African/European/Native American ancestry, and emigrated to Ontario in the 1860s. Her first husband was Edward Donnelly, and they had a daughter, Louisa Donnelly, b. 1869, in Kent County, Ontario, Canada. Louisa married Alfred Highgate, and is pictured with her daughters on this site under the Highgate surname. Highgates also emigrated to Ontario, from Allegheney County, PA, in the 1850s.
