Photo is of George Major, son of John Major and Mary Polly Gault of Knox Co., Tennessee. George moved to Arkansas in the late 1800's & was able to secure some type of land grant; I have a copy of the grant but haven't looked at it for several years. DCox-Halls Crossroads

Date taken : 1895 Description : Elzora Major (sister of Beccie) was the daughter of George Major and the granddaughter of John Major & wife Mary Polly Gault of Knox County, Tennessee. Her father, George, sold the property he inherited from his father and moved his family to Arkansas; however, he came back to Knox County on several occasions to visit his sister (my g-grandmother Elizabeth Major who married John C. Cox). This old photo was found in the trunk of my g-aunt Harriet S. Cox Walker & provided by her granddaughter. Several letters also have been found that my aunt Harriet exchanged with this part of the family over several years in the late 1800's. DCox-Halls Crossroads

On May 10, 1903 Harriet S. Cox (the daughter of John C. Cox and Elizabeth Major) married Marshall Walker, Sr. of Blount Co., Tennessee. Harriet and Marshall had been married for almost 60 years when Marshall died in March of 1962. His vision had grown progressively worse over the years, and I remember him reading only with the aid of a magnifying glass when we would visit in the late 1950's. Marshall's son (Marshall Walker, Jr) worked for years as a trucker until his death in Nov. of 1973. DCox-Halls Crossroads

As kids, we greatly admired and loved our great aunt Harriet. Slow to anger and quick to forgive, she seemed to embody the best virtues of her generation. As the recipient of many family artifacts handed down thru several generations, she loved to talk about our family history and the numerous links to all the early Tennessee pioneer families who settled in the area that became east Tennessee. Even in her 70's and 80's, she would become quite animated and her eyes would sparkle when she played a wonderful old fiddle that she appears to have gotten from her Uncle George Major. Some old letters found by another distant cousin thru her mother's line (Major) show that she kept in contact with extended family who had moved away from Tennessee in the late 1800's, and those letters were a wonderful window into part of her early years. D Cox Thank you Susan ! I hope you were able to find something useful in Dr. Manschardt's work. He spent many fruitful years digging thru all these old records, before his eyesight failed. I think we Renfro descendants owe him a debt of gratitude for his efforts.
