Kathy Smith I LIVED WITH MY GRANDPARENTS LON AND MAE ELLIOTT WHEN I WAS A LITTLE GIRL.SOME OF MY BEST CHILHOOD MEMORIES WERE WITH THEM.I REMEMBER GRANNY WASHING CLOTHES IN A LARGE KETTLE AND WASH BOARD AND THE BEST COOKING ON THAT OLD WOOD COOK STOVE.SHE WOULD MAKE LYE SOAP AND REALLY SCRUB US CLEAN WITH IT.SHE CANNED EVERYTHING FROM THE GARDEN THAT PAP PLANTED SO THEY DID'NT BUY MUCH FROM TOWN.PAP WOULD GO TO TOWN ALMORT EVERY SATURDAY,HE WOULD VISIT AND WHITTLE SWAP KNIVES WITH HIS FRIENDS AND ALWAYS BRING CANDY HOME TO US.HE WORKED HARD ON THAT LITTLE FARM PLOWING WITH HIS HORSES,HUNTING,TRAPPING.PAP WAS KNOWN FOR GROWING GREAT TASTING WATERMELONS.AT ONE TIME SOME BOYS WERE STEALING THEM,SO TO FIND OUT WHO WAS DOING IT HE PLUGED A FEW MELONS WITH CROTTEN OIL,WELL BY THE NEXT DAY WORD GOT AROUND WHICH BOYS HAD A VERY BAD BELLY ACHE ALONG WHAT WE CALLED THE "THE BACK DOOR TROTS".AFTER THAT THE MELONS WERE PRETTY MUCH LEFT ALONE.WE DID'NT HAVE MUCH(BY TODAYS STANDARDS),GRANNY WOULD MAKE US PRETTY LITTLE DRESSES OUT OF FLOUR SACKS,BUT LOOKING BACK(COSIDERING THE STRESS AND HUSSLE AND BUSSLE OF TODAY)WE WERE RICH.
