About Josey, Richard
THE TIMES OBITUARY Mr. RICHARD JOSEY, the well-known mezzotint engraver, died at Shepherd`s-bush last week from valvular disease of the heart. Mr. Josey was born at Reading, in 1841, and received his education at the Reading Bluecoat School. At the age of 13 he was apprenticed to Mr. Thomas W.Knight, and on the expiration of his apprenticeship he worked in the studio of the Chevalier Ballin, whose influence is evident in Mr. Josey`swork in stipple and line. His first commission was, we believe, given to him by the firm of Henry Grave and Co., for whom he continued to work for many years. His exhibits at the Royal Academy extended from 1876 to 1887,and a full list of these will be found in Mr. Algernon Graves`s `Royal Academy Exhibitors,` vol. IV. He engraved a large number of famous portraits, notably Thomas Carlyle and the equally famous picture of `My Mother`, now in the Luxembourg, after Whistler; the Earl of Shaftesbury, after Sir John Millais; Cardinal Manning, after Edwin Long, R.A.; anum ber after Sir Francis Grant, P.R.A., who was a great admirer of hiswork; David Garrick, after Gainsborough; Lord Roberts after W.W. Ouless,R.A.; Lord Wolseley and several other portraits by the late Frank Holl,R.A.. Among his more successful fancy subjects were `The Finding ofMoses,` after F. Goodall, R.A.; `Helen on the Walls of Troy,` after Lord Leighton, P.R.A.; `Preparing for Confirmation,` after Burgess; `HopeNursing Love,` and `Crossing the Ford,` after Sir Joshua Reynolds;`Gethse mane,` after J.S. Cuthbert; `Calvary,` after Sir Noel Paton; and`Pity and Love are Akin,` after Frank Miles. Mr. Josey took a prominentpart in Freemasonry, was Past Master of the Ranelagh and Shepherd`s-bushLodges, and was also preceptor of many lodges of instruction. He had a family of 14 children, of whom 12 are living; his wife died 3 years ago,and he never recovered from this loss. Blue coat School web site:
