These are three of the four children of Joseph Robert and Nannie Whitt Baker.
On the left is Sadie St. Claire (born 1916), Gladys Edna (born 1920) is in the middle, and Ellis Adrian (born 1917)is on the right. Not shown is Goldie, the youngest of the four children. Their mother died of pneumonia in 1925 when Goldie was two years old.

Joseph Robert Baker (1892-1982) with his first wife, Nannie Whitt (April 3, 1895 - April 3, 1925). Nannie was a daughter of Andrew Whitt and Mary Asbury.
Both she and Robert were born in Tazewell County, Virginia. His family moved to Greenbrier County, West Virginia, in 1898 and her mother, being widowed, brought her children there in 1908.
Nannie and Robert Baker had four children: Sadie St. Claire Baker, Ellis Adrian Baker, Gladys Edna Baker, and Goldie Virginia Baker.
After Nannie died of pneumonia on her 30th birthday (they had a newborn who died of pneumonia then as well), Nannie was buried in the Baker Family Cemetery on Butler's Mountain near Frankford in Greenbrier County.
Joseph Robert Baker remarried in 1928. He and his wife, Gertrude Lewallen (Morris) had ten children. Robert died in 1982 and is buried in the Baker Family graveyard beside Nannie and the baby.

Hansford Miller's parents were Jacob H. B. Miller and Martha Jane Russell Miller. Hansford was born around 1877, being three years old during the 1880 census of Scott County, Virginia.

Zollie Lewallen, one of the two children of George Lewallen, taught school in Oneida, Tennessee. She had a brother, Clyde, who also taught school in Onedia. I am uncertain of the date of this photograph. She married Sam B. McCoy in November of 1921. Her paternal grandparents were A. Robert Lewallen Martha Ann Morris Lewallen.

This picture was shared with the Lewallen (aka Morris) family by Florence Thompson Todd of Elgin, Tennessee. Florence was the wife of Elmer Todd, son of George Todd and Louisa Miller Todd. Louisa Miller Todd was a daughter of Jacob H. B. Miller and Martha Jane Russell Miller, originally of Virginia.

Robert Patrick Miller was married to Betty Jane Eckerl. He was the father of Robin Gaye Miller. His parents were Thomas Jackson Miller and Sarah Belle Wilson. His paternal grandparents were Shannon Augustus Miller and Mary (Unknown). His paternal great grand parents were Elijah Craig Miller and Sarah Elizabeth Dean. His paternal great, great grand parents were Jacob H. B. Miller and Martha Jane Russell.

ROBERT was a son of Andrew Russell "Russ" Lewallen II and Perlisca Ann "Phoebe" Davis who was born around 1827. Robert's parents, Andrew Russell Lewallen and Perliscia (1825/27-1885), married November 15, 1846, in Morgan County, TN. In addition to Robert, they had the following children: Frank (who fathered twin babies which are buried in the Wolf Creek Cemetery); George Todd (half-brother, mother was Hannah Todd, who married Salina Morris, and when Salina died he married Louisa Miller and they had nine children - Josie, Hattie, Monroe, Laura, Elmer, Golda, Maud, Gladys, and Clifford); Andrew F., Lucinda M. (or "Cindy" who married Thomas Russell); John F., Charlotte J., Sarah E., William Bluford (who married Sarah Smith with whom he had four sons and two daughters); Charles Russell (who married first Amelia Smith who died giving birth to twins, and later Emma Galloway); Lottie (who married William C. Russell or "Bill" and had four children, Anna Russell Hable, Julia, Abby, and Hew); and Winfield Esau called "Winks", who married Emma Duncan, had two daughters named May and Florence, and a son named Charles. Winks died young of typhoid fever and his family then moved away).

MARTHA was born to Willis Morris and Nancy Hanks in 1841 in Sunbright, TN. She died on April 21, 1911, in Modesto, CA. Her siblings were John Richard, Salina Dove, Nancy Green, Thomas Asbury, Willis Turner, Pleasant Miller, Mary Jane, and Joseph Smith.

My father, Joseph Robert Baker, grandson of James William Baker and Fannie Ellis Baker. He was born to Frank Baker and Lizzie Fudge Baker in Tazewell County, Virginia, on January 23, 1892. The family moved to the Buckeye (Butler's Mountain in Greenbrier County, West Virginia) when Joseph Robert was 6 years old, traveling by road wagon which was drawn by a team of horses. The picture was taken in a studio in Richwood, Nicholas County, West Virginia, in 1907. Prior to this picture being taken, the diphtheria epidemic had struck his family and some younger siblings died. They are buried on Butler's Mountain in Greenbrier County, West Virginia, in the Baker family graveyard. A sister who was born after the diphtheria epidemic survives still, Garnett Baker O'Dell of Richwood, West Virginia.

Joseph Robert Baker married Nannie Whitt and they had four children: Sadie St. Clair Baker, Ellis Adrian Baker, Gladys Edna Baker, and Goldie Baker. Nannie died of pneumonia on her 30th birthday. Joseph Robert Baker then married Gertrude Ethel Llewellyn (aka Gertrude Ethel Morris) and their union produced ten children: Shirley Alifair Baker, George Herbert Baker, Vivian Hazel Baker, Alfred Dale Baker,
Walter Lee Baker, Mildred Lucille Baker, Betty Josephine Baker, Arnold Robert Baker, Dreama Gail Baker (me - born 1948), Patricia Ann Baker.

Joseph Robert ("Bob") survived having both diphtheria circa 1905 and influenza during the 1918 epidemic. He died of adverse effects of sulfa drug on October 2, 1982, being of sound mind and having read without glasses all his life.

Lizzie Fudge Mitchell Baker, born 1873, married to Francis (Frank) Baker in 1887. They moved from Tazewell County, VA, to WV in 1898. At the time this picture was taken, she was about 30 years old. She worked as a substitute teacher. Her husband, Frank, was the son of James William Baker, Civil War Veteran, and Fannie Ellis Baker.

Her husband Frank is listed in the 1880 TAZEWELL CO VA CENSUS: # 296 88th Dist

I remember visiting my grandmother Lizzie with my father, Joseph Robert Baker, in Richwood when I was a small child. She and my Aunt Garnett lived together on Main Street. As of 2006, Lizzie's daughter Garnett Baker O'Dell still lives in Richwood.

Fannie Ellis Baker (nee Baker) married James William Baker, her first cousin. Picture mid-1880s.

James William Baker (January 17, 1834 - 1928) and Fannie Ellis Baker Baker (1836 - 1901) were the parents of eight children:

Lillian "Lillie" Baker, born in 1861 in Louisa County, Virginia. She married John Christian Dickensen. Lillie died July 19, 1901, in Tazewell County.

Dudley Davis Baker was born on February 18, 1962, in Louisa County. He married Sarah "Sallie" T. Tabor in Tazewell County on September 22, 1885. Dudley died on June 1, 1922, at Bossevain in Tazewell County.

Emily Ellis Baker was born in 1864. She married Joseph Hankins, son of William Harrison Hankins and Hannah Harrison Asbury.

Rosa Carlton Baker was born about 1866.

Francis "Frank" Baker was born about 1868. His children included Carl Baker, Joseph Robert Baker (my father), Al Ed Baker, and Garnett Baker O'Dell (Aunt Garnett is living, Richwood, WV, October 1906). Two other children, Mildred and James, died of diphtheria as small children in the early 1900s and are buried in the Baker Family Graveyard on Butler's Mountain above Frankfort and Renick in Greenbrier County, WV.

Mildred "Millie" Thomson Baker was born about 1871. She died of tuberculosis on February 15, 1901, in Tazewell County, VA.

Margaret "Maggie" Montague Baker was born about 1873. She married Tolbert Bills in LaFollete, TN, on March 23, 1916.

Alfred Martin Baker was born in Virginia on December 15, 1875. He married Nannie Grey Hayes on January 20, 1897. He died on March 25, 1862.

My mother, Gertrude Ethel Lewallen (aka Morris) Baker Goddard, was the daughter of Balaam Eugene Lewallen (Leuallen), born in Scott County, Tennessee, and Ida Bell Miller Lewallen, born in Virginia.

Household: ROBERT (A. ROBERT) AND MARTHA MORRIS LEWALLEN (These are the parents of Mom’s father, Eugene. This census lists my grandfather, Balaam Eugene Lewallen, at the age of 8.) Eugene's father, Robert was born on 17 Jul 1849 and died on 22 May 1937 in Glenmary, TN. Eugene's mother, Martha Ann Morris Lewallen, was born on January 16, 1841. She married in 1862 in Sunbright, Tn. She died in Modesto, California.

Nannie Whitt was born in 1895 and died on her thirtieth birthday. She is buried in the Baker Family Graveyard above Renick and Frankfort in Greenbrier County, WV. Her parents were Andrew J. Whitt and Mary Jane Asbury Whitt.

Regarding Andrew J. Whitt and Mary Jane Asbury, all their children were:

ELIAS H. Whitt, born May 1876, married “Sis” Spence. Lost his wife and baby girl by the time he was twenty-five years old; also had a son.

THOMAS A. Whitt, born July 1877, married Hannah Asbury.

CYNTHIA “Cynnie” Whitt, born March 1879, married James Hankins.

HOLDEN Whitt, well liked, died unmarried at around age 30.

JONAH Whitt, born April 1880. Married Patty Hankins. Successful farmer, lived to the age of 88. Raised Goldie Virginia Baker (Gabbert), daughter of Joseph Robert Baker and Nannie Whitt, after Nannie's death.

This is a picture of Ida Bell Miller Lewallen (aka Morris). She was born in Scott County, VA, to Jacob H. B. Miller and Martha Jane Russell Miller, and the family later moved to Tennessee. Ida married Balaam Eugene Lewallen. They moved to WV around 1911 and then went by the name of Morris.

This picture was taken on June 6, 1938, six months before Ida died suddenly, probably of cerebrovascular accident, while tending to farm chores. Ida was known as a kind and gentle soul.

These men are logging. The young man on the rail car at left is my father, Joseph Robert Baker, around age 17. He was born in 1892 and died in 1982. The gentleman with the horses is Mr. Hannah, first name unknown, who owned them. Does anyone know who the other young men are?

In logging, the men laid their track as they went, and took it up behind them.

Lizzie Fudge Mitchell Baker, Joseph Robert Baker’s mother, at home in Richwood, WV. Born in Tazewell County, Virginia, her parents were Charter Mitchell, a minister, and Martha Cameron. She married Francis "Frank" Baker (born about 1868) of Tazewell County, VA. The family moved to West Virginia in 1898, traveling by road wagon, pulled by a team of horses. My father, Joseph Robert Baker, was six years old at that time and remembered losing a toy metal horse in the mud when they encountered a downpour during the trip.

Children of Lizzie and Frank included Carl Baker, Joseph Robert Baker (my father - Dreama Gail Baker), Al Ed Baker, Garnett O’Dell (living, Richwood, WV). Other children Mildred and James died of diphtheria in the early 1900s and are buried in the Baker Family Graveyard on Butler’s Mountain above Frankfort in Greenbrier County.

Joseph Robert Baker (January 23, 1892 - October 2, 1982) with wife Gertie Lewallen Morris Baker. Behind them is Gertie's mother, Ida Bell Miller Lewallen (aka Morris).

Robert had lost his first wife, Nannie Whitt, to pneumonia on her thirtieth birthday, and had four children to look after. Of these, Goldie was only two years old, and was taken by the Whitt family to raise. Gertie assumed the care of the other three.
