  • Ethnicity & Family History

He was a white United States citizen. Both his father, Dr. George Tryon Harding, and mother Phoebe Elizabeth Dickerson, were born in Blooming Grove, Morrow, Ohio, USA. His paternal grandparents were from Pennsylvania and Ohio and his maternal grandparents were from Pennsylvania and West Virginia. It is believed that there is African American blood in the Harding lineage.
  • Nationality & Locations

Warren was born and raised in Blooming Grove, Ohio. He spent a majority of his life in a small city in rural central Ohio called Marion. He was found of this town, and when Harding was in political office, he spoke highly of his love for Marion and its way of life.
  • Early Life & Education

Warren's education was somewhat informal and was largely acquired through self-study and practical experience. Harding grew up in Ohio and attended local public schools as a child. He later attended Ohio Central College where his father attended, but he did not complete his studies there. Instead, he left college to pursue a career in journalism and worked as a printer, reporter, and editor at various newspapers throughout Ohio. Through his work in journalism, Harding gained a wide range of knowledge and experience, and he was known for his broad intellectual interests and his commitment to lifelong learning. He read widely and was well-versed in history, literature, and politics. He also had a strong interest in science and technology and was an early advocate of new inventions such as the automobile and the airplane. Harding's lack of formal education was not a hindrance to his success in politics, as he was able to use his skills as a communicator and organizer to build a strong political base in Ohio and to win the presidency in 1920. However, his administration was marked by several scandals, and some historians have suggested that his lack of formal education may have contributed to his administration's problems.
  • Religious Beliefs

Warren was a Christian and was raised in the Methodist Episcopal Church. He attended church regularly and was active in the church throughout his life. During his presidency, Harding frequently invoked religious language in his public speeches and writings. He often spoke of the importance of faith, prayer, and morality, and he sought to promote these values in American society. In particular, Harding was known for his efforts to promote Christian unity and cooperation among different denominations. He supported the formation of the Federal Council of Churches of Christ in America, which aimed to bring together various Protestant denominations in a common cause. It is worth noting that some of Harding's personal behavior was at odds with traditional Christian teachings, including his extramarital affairs. However, Harding remained a devout Christian throughout his life and saw no conflict between his faith and his actions.
  • Military Service

Warren G. Harding did not have any military service. He was too young to serve in the military during the Civil War, which took place when he was a child, and he did not serve in any other military conflicts during his lifetime.
  • Professional Career

In his early life, Harding worked as a teacher, an insurance man, and made a brief attempt at studying law. He then raised enough money in partnership with others to purchase a local newspaper that wasn't doing too well called "The Marion Star". Soon after purchasing the newspaper, he began his political career. He worked for the campaign of Republican presidential candidate William McKinley, (Ohio's former governor) and while working for McKinley, Harding began making a name for himself through Ohio. In 1898, Harding ran for state Senate and was elected to a two-year term. Harding was quite unknown at the start of his term, but by the end of it, was one of the most popular figures in the Ohio Republican Party. At the end of his term, he was re-elected for a second term. In 1903, Harding announced he would run for Ohio State Governor which he won, and later also ran for US Senator in 1914, which he also won. Harding then rose to his most commonly known role as President of the United States. He served from 1921-1923. His term in office was filled with scandal (such as Teapot Dome) but Harding was known for embracing technology and was sensitive to the plights of minorities and women.
  • Personal Life & Family

Harding was known for having an extramarital affair with Carrie Fulton Phillips of Marion which lasted about 15 years from about 1905-1920. The affair was found while Francis Russell was researching his book in 1963 and discovered letters from Harding to Phillips. These letters were donated to the Ohio Historical Society, although wanted the letters destroyed to preserve what remained of Harding's reputation. A lawsuit ensued when Harding's heirs claimed copyright over the letters. The case was settled in 1971, with the decision to donate the letters to the Library of Congress.

  • Obituary

The following is an excerpt from the obituary that was published in The New York Times on August 3, 1923: "President Harding died tonight at 7:35 o'clock, while seated in a chair in his room at the Palace Hotel, where he had been staying while on a trip to Alaska. His death was due to apoplexy, according to the physicians who attended him. Mrs. Harding was at his side when he passed away, as were also several of his closest friends. President Harding had been in poor health for several weeks, and had complained of feeling tired and run down. He had been on a trip to Alaska to promote the development of the territory, but had been forced to cut the trip short due to his declining health. Warren G. Harding was born in 1865 in Ohio, and had a distinguished career as a newspaper publisher and politician before his election as President in 1920. His administration was marked by several scandals, including the Teapot Dome scandal, but he was also known for his efforts to promote peace and prosperity in the aftermath of World War I. President Harding's death is a great loss to the nation, and he will be remembered as a leader who devoted his life to the service of his country."

Elected the 29th President of the United States in 1920, Harding was successor to Woodrow Wilson who had spent the last part of his Presidency extremely ill. Harding therefore ran against Wilson (who was not up for re-election) with the slogan "return to normalcy".

However, Harding's Presidency was cut short (about 2.5 yrs) by his own illness. He died in August of 1923 and was succeeded by his Vice-President, Calvin Coolidge. After Harding's death, the Teapot Dome scandal and his extra-marital affairs came to light.

100 years and 1 day ago on Nov 2nd 1920, an Ohio Republican Warren G. Harding, was elected the 29th President of the United States. The US was just out of WW1, a pandemic was ending, and it was the first Presidential election in which women could vote. He ran on the slogan "return to normalcy". The turnout was 49.2% and he didn't finish his term due to his death. Only after his death did the Teapot Dome scandal and his extramarital affairs come to light. Have we changed much in 100 years?
