A Lincoln campaign button from his Presidential race in 1860. Lincoln was an early adopter of photography for campaigning. The photo of him is copied from a popular 1858 ambrotype attributed to Roderick M. Cole of Peoria, Ill. Pretty brave of him since he wasn't considered the handsomest of men at the time. On the other side, was a photo of the Vice Presidential nominee, Hannibal Hamlin. I'd love to have one of these now! Photo courtesy of the Library of Congress

This photo of Abraham Lincoln was taken just four years before he died. Something about the look on his face is haunting.

President Abraham Lincoln reading to his son Tad (a nickname given to him by his father - his full name was Thomas Lincoln). Tad was the youngest of the four Lincoln children. Tad never went to school (from descriptions of his behavior, we may have called him hyperactive today) and also had a cleft palate. He died at age 18 (in 1871)of CHF. Two brothers survived him. A photo of the Abraham Lincoln-Hannibel Hamlin campaign button for the 1860 presidential election. Born in 1809, he was about 51 years of age at the time this photo was taken. While we remember him as having a beard, he only grew the beard shortly before he was elected. On slavery, he said "Whenever I hear anyone arguing over slavery, I feel a strong impulse to see it tried on him personally."

Photo in our family photo album containing mostly photos from civil war era. Haven't found another photo like this of Lincoln so don't know the date. Appears to be a drawing - not actual photo. Must have been time-frame when he was President as he has the beard and don't think he had a beard prior to becoming President. Anyone knowing estimate age of photo or information of photo I would welcome!
