In 1812, in the year that Acheson Jeremiah Sydney Ffrench was born, on June 1st, U.S. President James Madison asked the U.S. Congress to declare war on the United Kingdom. Thus began the War of 1812. Great Britain tried to avert the war as they saw it as a way for the U.S. to annex Canada - and they were simultaneously involved in a war with France.

In 1832, by the time he was 20 years old, on August 2nd, the Bad Axe Massacre ended the last major Native American rebellion east of the Mississippi River. The Massacre was the last battle of the war between white settlers and militia in Illinois and Michigan Territory and the Sauk and Fox tribes. 400 - 500 of the Native American warriors were killed outright. Some escaped but were soon killed by Sioux, who were working with the US soldiers.

In 1842, he was 30 years old when on August 14th, General William J. Worth declared that the Florida War - also called the Second Seminole War - was over. It was the "the longest and most costly of the Indian conflicts of the United States", lasting from 1835 to 1842. By the end of the war, it was costing $93,300 per month - plus the pay of the regular soldiers. An agreement allowed the Seminole either to move west or to move to a reservation in southwest Florida.

In 1857, when he was 45 years old, on March 2nd, the largest slave auction in US history was begun. Called "The Weeping Time", the auction lasted 2 days. Slave owner Pierce M. Butler - who had inherited the slaves 20 years before but was now deeply in debt - sold 436 men, women, children, and infants, all of whom were kept in stalls at a racetrack in Savannah, Georgia. The people were held for weeks before the auction in the horse stalls.

In 1870, in the year of Acheson Jeremiah Sydney Ffrench's passing, on June 26th, Christmas was declared an official federal holiday in the United States. By 1860, 14 states had declared Christmas a legal holiday but the practice of celebrating Christmas was a local - and religious - choice previously.
