He was in a relationship with Mary A Conway Deerfield, and had children Michael Henry Deerfield, Frederick Francis Deerfield, William Francis Deerfield, Annie Deerfield Brennan, John Deerfield, and Bessie Deerfield Kennedy. Alexander Deerfield died at age 62 years old on July 29, 1917 at 1423 Fifth Avenue, in Troy, and was buried at St. Mary's Cemetery in Troy.

In 1855, in the year that Alexander Deerfield was born, on March 3rd, Congress appropriated $30,000 to create the U.S. Camel Corps. The idea was to use camels as pack animals in the Southwest and 34 camels were bought. But the Army wasn't enthusiastic about the idea and after the Civil War the Camel Corps was entirely abandoned.
