1914 World Events

Add Alfred's birthday or the date he died to see a list of historic events that occurred during Alfred's lifetime.

In 1800, the federal government moved from Philadelphia to Washington D.C. The site of the new capital had been chosen by President George Washington several years earlier and he appointed Pierre (Peter) Charles L'Enfant to lay out a plan for the new city.

In 1845, on January 23rd, the US Congress created a uniform date for federal elections. From that date on, they were held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November - the date when Presidential elections are held currently.

In 1852, on February 11th, the first women's public toilet was opened in London. Paris had public toilets much sooner and Berlin had opened one in 1820.

In 1870, on June 26th, Christmas was declared an official federal holiday in the United States. By 1860, 14 states had declared Christmas a legal holiday but the practice of celebrating Christmas was a local - and religious - choice previously.

In 1914, in the year of Alfred Mcdonald's passing, in only his second big-screen appearance, Charlie Chaplin played the Little Tramp, his most famous character. The silent film was made in January and released the following year. Of the character, Chaplin said: "On the way to the wardrobe I thought I would dress in baggy pants, big shoes, a cane and a derby hat. I wanted everything a contradiction: the pants baggy, the coat tight, the hat small and the shoes large." The moustache was added to age his 24-year-old face without masking his expressions.
