1864 - In the year that Amelia Butterworth was born, on February 25th, the first prisoners arrived at Andersonville Prison in Georgia. Andersonville became notorious for the conditions that Union prisoners endured. 500 prisoners had left from Richmond, Virginia the week before - eventually 13,000 prisoners would die at the prison.

1894 - Amelia was 30 years old when on March 12th, for the first time, Coca-Cola was sold in individual bottles as a drink for consumer consumption. Previously, it was sold as a syrup for upset stomachs - over the counter.

1904 - At the age of 40 years old, Amelia was alive when the United States acquired the Panama Canal Zone. Now an unincorporated territory of the U.S., the Canal Zone had been previously held by the French, who were constructing a canal. The U.S. took over the construction of the Panama Canal and it was finally finished in 1914, when it was opened to commercial shipping. The United States held the Canal Zone until 1979.

1941 - At the age of 77 years old, Amelia was alive when in his State of the Union address on January 6th, President Roosevelt detailed the "four freedoms" that everyone in the world should have: Freedom of speech, Freedom of worship, Freedom from want, and Freedom from fear. In the same speech, he outlined the benefits of democracy which he said were economic opportunity, employment, social security, and the promise of "adequate health care".

1946 - In the year of Amelia Butterworth's passing, on July 4th, the Philippines gained independence from the United States. In 1964, Independence Day in the Philippines was moved from July 4th to June 12th at the insistence of nationalists and historians.
