Andrew J. Gadek Jr., accepted surrender of of German Rhine fleet
WOODBRIDGE - Andrew J. Gadek Jr., 65, of Buns Lane died Tuesday at Union Hospital, Elkton, Md.
Born in Perth Amboy, he had been a Woodbridge resident most of his life. He had been an officer and senior vice president of the Brunswick Sign and Exhibit Corp. of Franklin for the past 17 years. Mr. Gadek was a communicant of St. James R.C. Church.
An Army captain during World War Il, he served with the ist Infantry Divi sion, "Big Red One," in Germany and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Bronze Star for action in Germany from March 10 through May 1, 1945. He took part in the surrender of German forces at the Elbe River and accepted the surrender of a German fleet at the Rhine conquest.
Retiring from the Army in 1946, Mr. Gadek was appointed commanding officer of the Woodbridge National Guard at its inception, retiring with the rank of colonel in 1971. He was also a member of the Retired Officers Association.
Surviving are a brother, William Sr. of Woodbridge, and a sister. Louise Knoles of North Caldwell. A full military funeral and Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 9 a.m. Saturday in St. James Church. Burial wii be in the church cemetery. Arrangements are by the Greiner-Hawke Funeral Home, 44 Green St. Woodbridge.
