In 1804, by the time she was 53 years old, on December 2nd, Napoleon was crowned as Emperor of France. It was a spectacular ceremony - even the Pope attended - and Napoleon and Josephine's garments were expensive and lavish. Napoleon lifted the crown to his own head, effectively naming himself Emperor. After the actual coronation, street musicians and peddlers entertained the crowds in the streets.

In 1807, when she was 56 years old, on February 19th, former Vice President of the United States Aaron Burr was arrested on charges of treason, accused of plotting to grab parts of Louisiana and Mexico in order to create an independent republic. On September 1st, he was acquitted of the charges. Although he was deemed to be guilty of plotting against the U.S., he was not found to be guilty of an "overt act" - which is the Constitutional requirement to be met. Burr's reputation, after the charges and the duel with Alexander Hamilton, was ruined, however.

In 1818, Anna was 67 years old when on October 20th, the Treaty of 1818 - between the U.S. and the United Kingdom - established the boundary between the U.S. and British North America as the 49th parallel north. The treaty also allowed for joint occupation and settlement of the "Oregon Country" - known currently as the Pacific Northwest of the United States and British Columbia in Canada.

In 1828, she was 77 years old when on April 20th, French explorer René Caillié became the first non-Muslim to enter Timbuktu and to later return alive. He gave Europeans a first hand description of the city. He was awarded a prize of 10,000 francs for his trip - offered by the Société de Géographie.

In 1832, in the year of Anna Foote Emery's passing, by February 12th, a cholera epidemic in London claimed at least 3,000 lives - it eventually killed 6,536. The epidemic spread to France and North America later in the year. Cholera is spread through contaminated food and water but at the time, it was thought to be spread by a "miasma” - a bad smell - in the air.
