In 1818, on December 3rd, Illinois was admitted as the 21st U.S. state. Presidents Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, and Barack Obama were from Illinois. Ronald Reagan was the only U.S. President who was born and raised in Illinois.

In 1829, on June 19th, Robert Peel established the Metropolitan Police Service in Greater London - the first modern police force. The first officers, affectionately called "bobbies," went on patrol on September 29th.

In 1856, on January 26th the Battle of Seattle occurred. Marines from the ship the USS Decatur, stationed in Elliott Bay, along with about 50 Seattle settlers, fought Native Americans in the area. Territorial Governor Isaac Stevens had declared a "war of extermination" on Native communities 5 days before.

In 1878, in Africa, the death of the last confirmed Cape lion occurred. The Cape lion was slightly larger than other lions and had black ears, a black mane, and black hair on its belly.

In 1885, in the year of Anna Winifred (Ashton) Matthews's passing, on January 24th, the Fenians - Irish Nationalists - set off dynamite bombs in the House of Commons chamber, Westminster Hall, and the Tower of London. Four civilians and two policemen were injured.
