In 1897, in the year that Arthur Berridge was born, on September 21st, editor and publisher Francis P. Church responded to a letter to the editor from Virginia O'Hanlon, 8 years old. Church responded with the now famous editorial "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus".

In 1900, by the time he was only 3 years old, the U.S. helped put down Boxer Rebellion. The Boxer Rebellion took place in China, where the presence of "outsiders" (foreigners) was resented.
