Timeline

1886 - In the year that Arthur Lake was born, on June 13th, the "Great Vancouver Fire" destroyed most of Vancouver, British Columbia. The local Squamish tribe rescued people who had jumped into bodies of water to escape the conflagration.

1908 - At the age of 22 years old, Arthur was alive when unemployment in the U.S. was at 8.0% and the cost of a first-class stamp was 2 cents while the population in the United States was 88,710,000. The world population was almost 4.4 billion.

1916 - He was 30 years old when the Battle of Verdun was fought from February through December. It was the largest and longest battle of World War I, lasting 303 days. 1934 - By the time he was 48 years old, on June 6th, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission was formed as a response to the stock market crash of 1929 and the continuing Great Depression. Previously, the states regulated the offering and sales of stocks - called "blue sky" laws. They were largely ineffective. Roosevelt created a group (one member was Joseph Kennedy, father of the future President Kennedy) who knew Wall Street well and they defined the mission and operating mode for the SEC. The new organization had broad and stringent rules and oversight and restored public confidence in the stock market in the United States.

1971 - In the year of Arthur Lake's passing, in March, Intel shipped the first microprocessor to Busicom, a Japanese manufacturer of calculators. The microprocessor has since allowed computers to become smaller and faster, leading to smaller and more versatile handheld devices, home computers, and supercomputers.
