Arthur Charles Reed was born to Charles H. Reed (born 1862) and Alice McDevitt (1864 - 1902). Both of his parents were born in Indiana. He had five siblings, including: Mary Jessie, Selina, Helen, and Ethel Reed. Note: although most records say that Arthur's birthdate was September 1, 1897, some records say that he was born on the same date in 1898. Arthur Reed married Catherine, or Kathryn, Ann Erskine (born 1902) and they had two daughters, Jane Ellen Reed (1927 - 2000) and Betty Jean Reed. Born and raised in Evansville, Indiana, Arthur later moved to Detroit Michigan, where he died at the age of 64 in the suburb of Harper's Woods, Michigan.

When he was 31, Arthur was a roofer in the building industry. At the age of 53, Arthur was divorced, living in Detroit, Michigan, and working as a sheet metal worker in an auto factory.

On his World War II draft card, Arthur was described as being 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing 148 pounds. He had blue eyes, brown hair, and a "light" complexion. Married twice, Arthur married Catherine, or Kathryn, Ann Erskine (born 1902) and they had two daughters, Jane Ellen Reed (1927 - 2000) and Betty Jean Reed. He later divorced Catherine and was married to Bernadine when he died.
