In 1841, in the year that Askild Askildsen was born, on Sunday, June 6th, the United Kingdom conducted a census, the first British census to record the names and ages in every household and to be done nationally at a set time. A few days before the census, forms were delivered to each home and they were picked up on the morning of the 7th.
In 1881, on May 21st, Clara Barton, a nurse, founded the American Red Cross. She was inspired by the Red Cross in Geneva Switzerland and the International Red Cross.
In 1917, the U.S. Virgin Islands were purchased from Denmark in January. While they are U.S. citizens, Virgin Islanders are ineligible to vote for the President of the United States.
In 1960, on September 26th, the first televised debate for a Presidential campaign in the United States - Kennedy vs Nixon - was held. Seventy million people watched the debate on TV. The debate pre-empted the very popular Andy Griffith Show.
In 1999, the fear that Y2K (year 2000) would cause the failure of computers worldwide when clocks didn't properly update to January 1st, 2000 became near panic. While some computer systems and software did have problems, the panic was unfounded and computer life went on.
