In 1887, in the year that August Turmell was born, on January 20th, the US Senate gave the US Navy the right to lease Pearl Harbor as a naval base. Pearl Harbor is on the island of Oahu, a part of the Hawaiian Islands. The Navy was given direction to maintain "a coaling and repair station" at the harbor.
Did you know?
In 1894, at the age of just 7 years old, August was alive when large reserves of oil were discovered on the Osage Indian reservation in Oklahoma. Previously thought to be "useless" land - not even good for farming - the tribe had bought the land themselves. The discovery of oil made the Osage the "richest group of people in the world" at the time.

Holy men, hunters, chiefs, merchants and ceremonial dancers - discover photos of the indigenous peoples of North America. We're fortunate that photographers like Edward Curtis and Heyn & Matzen took such pains to document Native American culture around 1900. Many are included here, as well as a couple from the 1920's.
