"Remember the Maine" became a rallying cry and precipitated the United States' declaration of war on Spain two months later - the beginning of the Spanish-American War. On December 10th, the war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. The Treaty gave the U.S. Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Guam - for $20 million - and, temporarily, Cuba.

Although the Act was supposed to be temporary, it stayed in effect until 1965.

The disaster was so shocking that it replaced World War II in the headlines and lead to reforms in safety standards and codes.

1955 - Aurora was 57 years old when in January, President Eisenhower sent direct aid to South Vietnam. In February, U.S. advisors were sent to train troops.

1985 - In the year of Aurora Cardenas's passing, on March 7th, the song "We Are the World" was released as a charity effort to alleviate the African famine.
